19 Children, Two Adults Dead in Elementary School Massacre

Let's continue our continuing coverage of what's happening with the shooting in texas. And let's go on the ground tour? Megan prats. Megan good morning to you. What's the update that you've been hearing on the ground so far? Well, I can say that it's a very quiet morning in mourning today here in you've all day and a large part of that is because this is a really tight knit community of about 20,000 people. This is not a massive city here in texas. This is one of those small towns where the community really knows each other. You can hear the roosters crowing as the sun starts to rise here in west texas and it is a time when people are waking up to a world that has completely changed for them. As we know so far. Uh, nearly 20 Children and a number of teachers have been declared dead. There are of course still Children unaccounted for, which is raising concern here in the community, particularly among those family members who have not yet been able to identify their Children. And this school was supposed to open for the second to last day of school, a time for celebration and excitement for the kids and instead it will remain shuttered. It will not reopen for this school year and activities across the district will not move forward. So rob elementary school will forever be marked by this tragedy that took place on its grounds. And unfortunately the Children who survive will also be marked by that as well. The families of those who suffered at the hands of this violence baker and Hannah. Well, Megan, what has the response from Washington looked like so far today. Unsurprisingly, you see that there is sort of a pointing of fingers that goes on whenever there is a mass shooting. One of the things that I remember from about 10 years ago when Sandy Hook happened when a shooter went into that elementary school and killed kindergartners is that there was really this sense of outrage in a, in a way that we have not seen before in a mass shooting. And the same is true here as well. When it is our babies. When it is our Children. The feeling is very, very different. And you've got that sense from the tone that president joe biden struck in his remarks Tuesday evening. Right after arriving back at the White House from Asia, I want to play part of what he had to say. These kinds of mass shootings rarely happen anywhere else in the world. Why they have mental health problems. They have domestic disputes in other countries. They have people who are lost. But these kinds of mass chinese never happened with the kind of frequency that happened in America. Why why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we accept this? Carnage Baker and Hannah. And that is the question being asked this morning, why when it is our Children do we accept it? And I think the reality for Americans waking up today to new news about the horrific events that took place on this ground just 12 hours ago is that the reality is that for gun ownership in America there is a cost and that cost can be the lives of our most innocent americans. And those two things have to be weighed against each other. And unfortunately, americans have chosen that that cost of life, even when it is fourth graders and third graders and teachers in an elementary school is worth the price to be able to continue to own guns the way we do today.
