A Closer Look at Queen Elizabeth II's Legacy 

come back to between bells everyone as the world continues to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth the second who passed away thursday at Balmoral castle in Scotland, many around the world are remembering her legacy as the longest reigning british monarch in history, joining us now to discuss our Rachel Burchfield and Jessica Robinson, royal correspondents and host of podcast foil ladies, welcome to the show, thank you so much for coming on. Queen Elizabeth took the throne back in 1952. She was 25 years old, which is boggling to me now. Originally, as you guys know, she was third in line to the throne after her uncle and her father Rachel walked us through the history of how she became queen and why it was so unexpected. Yeah, well the queen, then Princess Elizabeth was born in 1926 and enjoyed a relatively quote unquote normal, as much as normal as a royal childhood could be. She was still a princess childhood had no idea that she would one day be the monarch. In 1936 when she was 10 years old, her uncle abdicated the throne to marry, divorced a while a Simpson who was an american and everything changed. Her father became king and put her Her in the direct line of succession to the throne. Her father died early far before he was expected to in 1952 and 25 and I had just heard Stephanie pet it a moment ago say, I can't imagine taking on that responsibility at 25. I'm 35 sitting here with you today and I um it's it's a remarkable legacy and rain that she had historic, historic remarkable. I couldn't agree more Jessica was she met with much resistance when she was appointed as Queen. You know, I think one thing about Queen Elizabeth is she is probably the most universally loved monarch in history and I feel like throughout her reign people have remained loyal to her even more so than the monarchy itself. Um She exudes so much um genuineness when she speaks and you can feel that you can see her character. She has been consistent throughout the decades on the throne and I think people have grown to appreciate that and love that and that's why, you know, she is such a special monarch Rachel. Queen Elizabeth became queen a few years after India gained independence. What did that break up mean for the monarch at the time? The question that I really don't have the best answer to for you, but I can tell you that, um I will say that I am expecting major shifts and changes within the commonwealth um after her death. We'll see what happens, but we've talked on our show many times about how we think that things will change. Obviously the India India was a change right before she took the throne, but you know, there will be probably a lot of changes happening. We saw that this spring with William and kate tour the Caribbean how multiple countries are considering leaving the commonwealth. I think many of them were waiting to see the queen passed away before that actually happened. So we'll see what happens. But I anticipate a lot of changes happening in Charles's reign just as they happened in the beginning of her reign as well. Yeah, sure. And Jessica, I do want to talk about Prince Philip, they were married for 73 years. Can we talk a little bit about Prince Phillip's legacy? Yeah, we, you know, we've talked about that on our podcast. Um, I mean, he lived to be 99 years old. Um, he was a very quiet person, you know, he didn't like the spotlight, but their love and their bond was so strong and she really leaned on him for support throughout her reign. And he was someone that, you know, she turned to and she sought his advice in difficult times and I think it was really, You know, a difficult partying when, when he left the world just over about a year and a half ago now, um but they had a very special relationship and we know we expect the funeral of Queen Elizabeth to be held at Westminster Abbey, which is also where she and Prince Philip were married in 1947. Yeah, that is, that is absolutely historic Rachel. How would you describe the queen's royal style, her impact on her monarch. And I'm not talking about clothes just how she ruled her country, Just with grace and dignity always. Um she was steadfast. She was a rock in turbulent times, that I think that's why her loss is being felt so acutely today is because for the past 70 years, even as the world is spinning out of control, sometimes it feels like we've had her as as a bedrock and we don't have that anymore. I'm Positive that Charles, Charles has been preparing for this job for nearly 74 years. He will, he is the most well prepared person for a job, I think that exists, but she is, she is legendary for her stoicism, her just her strength and just absolute dignity, even as the world was sometimes falling apart around her Jessica, the queen was known for her reassuring words, her devotion to her people, but I do want to talk about the clothes now, because she was also known about fashion. Talk to me about that. Yeah. You know, one of the really unique things about um you know, Elizabeth is, she loved bright colors and bright fashion when she would go out in a crowd. She wanted to be seen and she wanted people to to recognize her and be seen to be believed and um we always saw her in these bright colors, turquoise, lime green, bright yellows and pinks. Um and she also was very traditional and had this classic look that really never goes out of style. Um and I think her fashion will be remembered in years to come and may inspire um future Royals Rachel. After looking back at the end of the day, what legacy is the queen leaving behind? Kind of question that makes me emotional. Um The best way I can say is thank you ma'am for everything and truly everything. I think at the end of the day, Even before she was Queen, when she was still Princess Elizabeth in 1947, so that would have made her 21 years old on her 21st birthday. She made a vow to serve her whole life. Whether it be long or short, thankfully for us, it was a long life and she never left the throne. In fact, just two days before her passing, of course she's appointing a prime minister. She made it through the platinum jubilee. She did every duty as assigned and carried it out with grace and class and elegance and dignity and I think her legacy will be that she kept her word.
