Actor Malin Åkerman Dishes on Vampire Comedy 'Slayers'

Alright, well slay or be slayed the new film slayers follows a father's seeking revenge on the vampires who killed his daughter. But since his 2022 when he finally discovers the powerful bloodsuckers hidden layer. Only the power of social media influencers to take them down. Social media influence guys, always things that the drama the features the star power of thomas, jane, Abigail, breslin and our next guest malin Akerman take a look so marlins, so good to have you here slayers is this fresh take on vampires? Obviously a popular movie genre, we've seen time and time again. So why can you tell us about this plot? It seems amazing. Well this one kind of marries our old vampire legends with influencers in this day and age and really makes it poppy and I guess it's a vampire comedy and dark comedy, which is very unusual and I've never seen before. Let's just put it that way. Yeah, I love it. And what's so interesting you say all this because the director and the director's note, he says the plot is a quote vision that speaks to the media obsessed wasteland of 2022. I mean what sort of the deeper meaning of this movie? Yes, I mean it's perfect. It really is, it really is gonna bring in all the younger audiences, you know, they're gonna want to see their favorite youtube stars and influencers who make appearances in this film. I mean, what is it do you think about vampires that always seem to be the work for so many different things as a metaphor and they're so interesting to younger younger viewers I think listen for me, I can only speak for myself and I think that there's that thing of the mysterious, that mysterious person in the corner and that's the person that you're drawn to, the bad boy, the you know, it's it's it's that element of mystery and excitement and there's something sexy, they're untouchable and you know, it's been around for me, the introduction was interview with the vampire, you know, brad pitt and tom so he doesn't want to be a vampire, those guys. Oh my God, Amen. So true. I mean I still I mean I still have hot flashes from that movie. It was so yes, I know. Okay, so you, by the way you play, let's talk about your character, this Beverly Rector, the wife of a reclusive billionaire. So what sort of her role in this secret vampire clan? Well you know, she's she's queen bee, she's Queen vampire. Um she's they're they're pretending to be these they're hiding in these media moguls bodies and they've they've obviously been around long enough to figure out how to make millions of dollars. Um but she's uh she's an evil evil queen vampire who just wants to find a new body to to continue on sucking blood for hundreds of years. Okay, so just strive also for us what the Stream team is in this field because they're sort of like this really important thing? Yeah, so you know, again because these directors have been around for hundreds of years, they're realizing that the new thing is um social media and they found this stream team which is this group of kids who basically have hundreds of thousands of followers, millions of followers across the globe and they just figured that this would be the best way to, to make more money is off of these guys and obviously to take their bodies as their new hosts, but to, to um make sure that they can continue their legacy through the new age, They're being smart about it. You know, for us it's, it's tech and apps, if you're making an app these days, you're making money. So they're just figuring out a new way to continue their legacies through social media kids. Okay, okay, okay. What's also interesting is I feel like horror movies always sort of have these cult followings like hocus pocus, you mentioned interview with the Vampire, you know, the Halloween franchise always has this cult following. What do you think is it about the horror genre that always has a cult following. You know, that is a really good question and I'm probably the worst person to ask because I am not a horror film I love yes, I really enjoy making it because I can't even walk through a corn maze without getting scared. Like I am the worst, the best person to have in a horror film because I don't even have to act. I get freaked out so easily. I don't know. But I think, you know, if when horror Films are done right, they scare the bejesus out of you and so I feel like people who are addicted to that feeling are gonna keep coming back for more. Oh yeah. And that's not me. No, I'm watching bros for the 900 times. Yeah, I'm all comedy. Yeah, exactly. Which is why this is perfect cause it's like sort of a dramedy horror. So it's like you have your foot in both ponds. Exactly. It's perfection. It's something a little bit for everyone.
