Actor Román Zaragoza Talks Season Two of 'Ghosts' & His 'Love Island' Obsession

Alright guys, let's switch gears here, Actor romans Argos as back as everyone's favorite native american apparition in the second season of ghosts and the CBS sitcom follows a couple who inherit a country home only to find out it's being haunted by several deceased residents, roman joined baker machado talk all the balco's indigenous representation in Hollywood and so much more take a look. So roman ghosts recently returned to CBS for its second season now for those who haven't seen it, which is crazy to think about how would you describe this show to people and why should they watch it? Okay, yes, ghosts, it's about this couple who inherit this haunted mansion that they don't realize is haunted and then there's there's all these ghosts living there and it's you know, it's a show full of heart and comedy and just a bunch of people that otherwise wouldn't ever have met are now trapped in this house together. And it's, it really makes us think about the pandemic a little bit, so it's great for the whole family, Great for all the and it's such a fun show and by the way, your character, one of the ghosts here and you've actually said that this season might actually explore how you died in the show you, by the way, don't have to give away anything about how this happened, but if it were to happen, how would you, would you have wanted some input it with the writers about how your character died in the show. You know, actually that is one of the greatest parts about working on the show is the transparency that we have with our showrunners, joe port joe wiseman is we really get to talk to them about ideas that we have and they bring up ideas that they have and um so yeah, you know, I don't want to give anything away, but you know, we might by diving into a little bit more of the backstory of SAS which is really exciting. Now we know the history of indigenous representation in Hollywood has not been good at all. Your character by the way it goes is of a native american tribe from the 15 hundreds. And you and the writers have talked about how you've worked to make sure that the character isn't a stereotype here. So in what ways is this character more three dimensional than other native american characters and shows that we've seen in the past? Well, yeah, amazing question. I love talking about this because it has been a really rough, you know, time for native representation for on tv and film. And the ties are really starting to change with shows like reservation dogs and Rutherford Falls. And and and I'm really excited to be part of our show too because we have an amazing monopoly consultants by the name of joe baker that we brought on season one who made me feel so safe because I think that's so important. You have to be able to engage with someone of that tribe or else how are you respectfully bringing this character to life if you're going to say he is you have to bring someone who's not to be able to answer those questions because I'm not line up and I so I didn't want to be that resource. You know I'm an actor first and so so you know we just had amazing conversations with joe port joe wiseman and and also john timothy is muscogee Creek and he's in the writer's room. So having that native voice in the writer's room is so important. Um and I think that's what really has changed, you know what it means to have native representation and what it means to have representation at all. Um on film and tv is not just having the actor, you know on screen being a representation but also having the voice in the writer's room. Absolute. one of the things that I love about your character is your character's father was introduced in an episode in season one but for a lot of our years they probably don't know this was actually played by your actual father in real life. I mean was it all strange to have your dad playing your father or did it feel right? It felt so right, you know my dad and I are so close so it was just amazing. He's the reason I got into acting when I was a kid and so to have that you know that moment on set and you know those scenes were just really emotional and it was just so easy for us. Like I swear we've had those exact conversations before about you know pursuing something that's really difficult and uh but but saying true to yourself so I'm I'm very grateful and hopefully you know bring him back soon. Okay good to know because if my dad was my co host on my show I would lose my mind. I would like to be the worst show ever. So one of the things I love is in season one episode six of ghosts, your character becomes obsessed with reality show. Are you a fan of any reality shows in real life or do you not share similar tv taste as your character? You know it's so funny you asked this because I wasn't a fan of reality shows but because of that episode I started watching Love Island because it's so good because it's so good. It's so good. I watched the recent season and it was one of those things I'm like you know what, I'm gonna give it give it a chance. You know sis a piece is obsessed with it. I'm gonna try it and I literally was obsessed. I watched like all 30 episodes in a matter of like two weeks. I can't I would never want to be on that show. But also I just love being a fly on the wall watching everybody. It's it's so fun. Oh yeah. Oh yeah no literally Love Island got me through like the last like five months it was like also by the way you're under accounting by the way you said 30 episodes, there's like 300 episodes by the way. Well that's the thing. I've only watched the new season of Love Island. Usa I haven't watched like all the previous seasons so I'm gonna have to go back and watch. Okay so beyond ghosts, what goal do you have as an actor in Hollywood? Is there any role that you're really dreaming right now and playing right now? Yeah. Well I really would love to also play roles that are are embody my diverse background. So I am of um mexican and japanese and Taiwanese descent. So um you know my mom was born in Japan and her family's from Taiwan and my dad is a and mexican descent. So I'd like you know I love bring that native representation but that's just part of me. I want to also you know dive into some more asian roles. I also want to play characters where race is not, you know the forefront of the character. I want to be able to you know dive into some more dramatic um films as well because to show my dramatic chops, I studied, I worked at this Shakespeare festival called the Oregon Shakespeare festival for a few seasons. So I wanna be able to show you know those chops as well and uh and also I want to be able to make my own projects. I've been working on this film called This Is Their Land, which I'm a producer on. And It's bringing, you know, shedding light on the modoc war of 1872-1873 between the people and the US Army. So I want to be able to shed light on history that's, you know, rather untold.
