Newly sworn-in New York Governor Kathy Hochul had a busy first day immediately imposing a school mask mandate while looking at ways to require vaccines for teachers and staff. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten joined Cheddar to discuss COVID policies to maintain in-person education and took time to praise Hochul for changing course from her predecessor Andrew Cuomo. "That was great that the new governor actually did a mask mandate in New York," she said. Weingarten also had strong words for governors who have been threatening school districts for establishing their own mask mandates. "It's time for any governor who's putting their politics ahead of public safety to stop."
