Annual Orchid Show Brings Hundreds of Flowers to NYC 

Welcome back, everyone. That's Baker Machado. I'm Manitoba. Thanks for joining us on this Friday. So it may be gray and cold outside, at least here in New York. But the New York Botanical Gardens Annual Orchid Show is an explosion of color cheddar zone. Shannon Lanier is on the scene with a look at this year's installation. What a cheery starts in the morning. Good morning, Shannon. That's right. It is a cheery start and sometimes you just, you gotta stop and smell the flowers. They smell so good. And this place is amazing here at the New York Botanical Garden. The orchid show is well on the way and there are hundreds of different and unique orchids. Just take a look at how beautiful this place is and just in case you don't know this year's theme is natural heritage and it was designed by landscape artist Lily Kwong. So here's what she had to say about the inspiration behind this year's show. This is probably the most autobiographical piece that I've ever done. The piece really draws on art objects that were important to my family and my Chinese roots, found a lot of grounding and empowerment from connecting with my own ancestry and the traditions and philosophies that have endured throughout generations. So I hope that in this country of immigrants that inspires people to look at their own personal stories. So this is the 20th annual orchid show and this also marks the first year that the show was ever designed by a female guest artist. So it's a great way to celebrate women's history month. And in some cases, this may be your best bet for seeing these unique flowers up close and in person because orchids are actually protected as an international species, which means that bringing them across borders is highly restricted. So a collection this massive with this many different types is very rare. And if this has actually inspired you to start growing some orchids of your own. Well, there are tons of tips on tiktok. The tag or orchid has actually been viewed over 500 million times and there's no shortage of plant accounts that can help you as well. Like this video on orchid 101 from PV plant guide, take a look, orchids like bright indirect light but can tolerate some direct light in the wild. They grow on trees kind of like air plants and don't really get a lot of direct sunlight. Light really depends on your environment. Like if you live in Florida, it shouldn't get more than two hours of direct sun. You'll scorch it north or east facing windows are great. These are aerial roots. Don't cut them. I like to water once a week. Take the pot, it's in, out of the decorative pot. Bring it to your sink and run under warm water for about 30 seconds and let drain completely. You can also miss once a week now, if that's way too much maintenance for you because I know I would still kill that thing. Put it in different pots. This is way too much for me. Don't worry, you can come down here to the New York Botanical Garden is right here in the boogie down Bronx. You can check out this amazing facility and also see the orchid show up until April 23rd. It's a perfect time to come down and learn more about it. But also coming back here in the next half an hour, we're gonna have an expert on hand.
