While general support for the LGBTQ+ community might be at an all-time high in the U.S., 2021 has been the worst year since 2015 when it comes to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. According to Amit Paley, CEO of the Trevor Project, the antagonism coming from governments especially is impacting youth who reported increased urges to commit suicide over the last year. “First of all, these policies are not needed, and they are very destructive,” Paley told Cheddar, regarding the spate of anti-trans legislation, in particular. "But the words and the rhetoric themselves are also very harmful."
