Apple announced its Apple Watch Ultra at the Far Out event weeks ago, and now it is finally available for customers for purchase. Kate Kozuch, an editor at Tom’s Guide, joined Cheddar News to break down the new features on the latest wearable device.

Apple Watch Ultra: What You Need to Know

So joining us now to discuss is kate cause gets editor over at Tom's guide kate, Thanks so much for joining us. So what are you most excited about with the Apple Ultra watch here? Hi baker. The most exciting new feature of the Apple Watch Ultra is the battery life, which you mentioned, it's rated for up to 36 hours, but reviewers are saying they're actually getting two days or over two days with frequent use of battery draining features like GPS. Previously, all Apple watch devices were redid for 18 hours or a day, basically. And that's been a complaint from users for so many years now. Now the Apple Watch Ultra has the best battery life of any Apple watch ever. Hands down. So that means less time on the charger and more time being active. Yeah, and by the way, it's kind of interesting here, kate because it's got a little bit more of a sporty vibe to us, walk us through some of these features why this is sort of perfect for those that are trying to basically stay fit here. Absolutely. So you're right, this is a very sporty design. First, it's larger, it's a 49 millimeter display that's also brighter so you can see it clearly when it's bright out or you're moving on like a bike ride the titanium body and flat sapphire crystal display can also kind of withstand being roughed roughed up more than a material like aluminum on the regular Apple watch. Then you have larger buttons and an added action button which is noted. They're bringing more functionality that you might need for sports, making it super easy and quick to launch a workout with literally just a click and there's also some new safety features and benefits here that I want to dive into. They have a siren feature that's exclusive. Just the Apple Watch Ultra explain this benefit here. I'm really excited about the siren and the Apple Watch Ultra. It's an exclusive feature that plays a continuous S. O. S alarm at 86 decibels that could be heard from up to 600 ft away. That could be really important in case of emergency, especially if you're out in a remote area and need help. But wherever you are, a feature like that could potentially save you even in an urban area. I only wish the standard Apple watch had a feature like that too. That's how excited I am about it. Yeah, but you have to think that eventually with the success of this, maybe it goes to the future models down the road. The other sort of thing that's interesting here, Katie is the design features here because the screen is bigger. What sort of Apple's reasoning behind that? I think there has been interest in a larger Apple watch display for making it more usable. If you have a larger screen, it's way more practical to read messages, take calls go through apps that you use even on your iphone think about it like it's it's really like having a small, small iphone on your wrist and of course four athletes who this watch is targeted for that just means that they can see all of their metrics on a large screen. They're not scrolling through if they just need to see what their heart rate is, that the plants that's easier than ever with a large screen. Okay, so let's talk about the competition in this space, especially as it becomes more crowded. You have google gearing up to jump in the market as well. You still have Fitbit in this as well. Where does Apple sort of, where are they in this sort of ecosystem here, can they stay competitive here? The flagship Series eight is still the example to follow in the mainstream every user smartwatch space. And that's not really showing any signs of change despite there being more smartwatches than ever, as you said. But the Ultra infringes on a sport watch market that has been dominated by Garmin now for many years, I think it will struggle to convert garment user, But what it does have going for it is that at its core, it's still the Apple watch experience offering the most features and inter connectivity from a smartwatch for iPhone users. Okay, but let's talk from a consumer standpoint, do you see the Apple watch ultra becoming more popular than the series eight watch? Or is this one just for a different market here. I think the price of the Apple watch Ultra might isolate some users. It's going to be $799. The standard Apple Watch starts at $399 and there's also a budget range Apple Watch called the Apple Watch sc that starts at $249 at those lower price points. I think that's going to be more attractive for the the Apple Watch experience. Whereas people who are serious about getting into some outdoor sports, they play sports and they want to be okay roughing up there. Watch a little bit.
