Biden Calls For Assault Weapons Ban

Meanwhile the world of politics waking up today and it's waking up a day after President biden called for an assault weapons ban in the in the battleground state of pennsylvania, let's bring Ariel Hickson, who's live in Washington to bring us more on this. Good morning, Ariel, good morning baker and Shannon. President Biden traveled to pennsylvania on Tuesday and delivered a speech on crime. Now, the centerpiece of his remarks was his safer America plan. A sweeping crime prevention plan. The focus was a ban on the sale of assault style weapons like the A. R 15, which is a common weapon amongst school shooters. In addition to the call for a ban on assault weapons, biden again rejected that common refrain from the far left of his party to defund the police. The slogan has drawn some criticism from Republicans and moderate Democrats and Biden joined in on that critique on Tuesday, when it comes to public safety in this nation. The answer is not defund the police, it's fund the police, fund the police and give them we expect them to do everything. We expect them to be protect us to be psychologists and to be sociology. I mean, we expect you to do everything Biden also took a more aggressive tone with Republicans. He attempted to draw a contrast between his accomplishments on crime like the bipartisan gun reform bill and the position that some Republicans have on the January six attack on the Capitol. Take a listen, let me say this to my Maga republican friends in Congress. Don't tell me support law enforcement. If you won't condemn what happened on the 6th. Don't tell me, vitamin on to say of those republicans, quote, you can't be pro law enforcement and pro insurrection. The entire speech was an effort to reshuffle the deck on crime. An issue that's amongst the worst polling issue for democrats. Just 10 weeks out from the november midterms. I felt like we should have been like, okay, yes, she was up there. But area, you know, the President, he clearly was more confrontational with republicans during this speech. So can we really expect to see more of that as we approach the midterms? Oh, yeah, we definitely can expect some more, I guess, fiery responses from the President. The President and his team are very much interested in drawing a big contrast between democrats and republicans. The President's Party usually has a tough time in midterm elections. So biden and his team are going to try to frame the election as a choice between two parties rather than a referendum on his job. So far as the President will see soon enough, if that strategy works.
