And tobacco manufacturers have started posting new warning signs about cigarette smoking in over 200,000 stores across the country. The signs which began appearing on Saturday are one of the final steps in a lawsuit filed by the DOJ against big tobacco in 1999. Now, these signs must be installed in stores by September 30 displayed until June 30 th 2025. They say smoking kills on average 1200 Americans every day in highly visible places. This move comes after years of disputing us District Court, Judge Gladys Kessler's judgment in 2006 where industry defendants were found guilty about lying about the dangers of cigarettes and second hand smoke.
