Biggest Moments From the 2022 Sag Awards

between those backs friends. I'm baker machado in new york and the 28th screen actors guild awards honoring some of the year's best television and film performances was last night. Now those who won big included the cast of ted Lasso and succession. They both won the ensemble for their work in the television, comedy and drama categories. So here to break down the big night is Ashley Bellman, entertainment reporter and tv host and contributor over at the Hollywood reporter. Great to have you here. So before we dive into some individual wins because there was a lot we can get to. This was our first award show of the year. How do you think it went? Because it was just so good to finally see an award show back on television last night. Right. I think it was such a good watch for all of us at home and you can see everyone there. The energy was up. The fashion was on point. I think everyone was just so happy to see each other and I think this is a wonderful kickoff to awards season in general. We're just ready for it. And I think that everything that we saw last night was a total indication for that. Okay, so let's talk about some of the winds. But I want to start with one of my favorite moments from last night, which was Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton was the moment when he won outstanding performance by a male actor in a tv movie or limited series because he was in the bathroom, which was when, I mean how would you be in the bathroom at that moment that I have been sitting there. How does that happen? But this moment was great. Was one of my favorites as well. Salma Hayek Hayek is on stage announcing him as the winner and he's late getting onto the stage because he said he's in the bathroom, he did a little run, a little acrobatics to get onto the stage and then apologized saying that the men's room was packed, so and then he went into this beautiful speech. The hulu drama was one of the best shows if you haven't watched yet. And for those that don't know, it looks at America's opioid crisis through the lens of addicts and big pharma. And Keaton then dedicated his award to his late nephew who passed from drug addiction. So this adds to the so much already incredibly received performance and well deserved win from Michael Keaton. Absolutely. My other favorite moment of the night besides the fact that Coda, which now it kind of almost seems like Coda might be the Oscars best picture Frontrunner given the fact that it snagged the award for best drama in terms of the ensemble last night was was the actor Troy Qazi who became the first deaf actor to win an individual sag award and his acceptance speech was so amazing last night doing it all in sign language. Yeah, and I think it's about time, you know, and that's kind of what he talked about, this is all about equality. We're finally seeing that it's a little bit unnerving that it took this long but we're seeing it now and yes, like you said a lot of times when we see happen at the SaG awards will repeat at the Oscars and then we also saw the cast winning for Koda. So I think that we are going to see them as a contender and I think they're going to take home more wins and I hope that more deaf actors will receive accolades after this moment. Absolutely. Let's talk about the international parts and some of this as well because squid game made saG awards history, the first non english language tv series to win acting prizes. And then you also of course got West Side story winning some amazing stuff as well for Ariana DeBose as well. But how big of a factor with squid game yesterday in terms of the international component. Cause usually you don't get international shows that do well at an awards show like this, nope, this is the first time, I mean squid game has been making history since it broke all these pop culture rules when it debuted in september. Now most watched series in the history of netflix. It's getting awards, it's getting those accolades, drama, actor, actress, tv stunts and lee said backstage that squids games success could be just the beginning for korean entertainment. And I agree with him. I think that we're going to see a lot more of this moving forward. And then you mentioned West side story, Ariana DeBose wins uh makes history as the first clear Afro Latina actress to win aside award. So she actually previously told thr that she was unsure about taking on the role of Anita who was previously portrayed by non black Latina actresses. She said she didn't know if there was space for her interpretation playing her as a black woman, but she did and we are so, so glad about it. Okay, so let's talk now. What we think about what's going to happen with Oscar's because the last week or so on The Oscars, the Academy have been under immense amount of pressure for basically getting rid of when I let me change that, um editing and recording acceptance speeches from a lot of different categories and they're going to put them in at different points throughout the show. That obviously has gotten a lot of backlash from a lot of Hollywood. The show is still going to be three hours a whole hour more than what we saw at the Sags. Do you think that there was anything we saw last night that maybe the Oscars can implement that might be good for them? You know what, I think it's going to be very similar to what we see because what we saw last night because everything we saw last night was successful and so well received. I think a lot of what we're going to see in terms of wins, like you mentioned are going to be repeats, we're gonna see kota gaining momentum. We may see Jessica Chastain taking a win because she had a surprise win in this. In her category will smith is almost definitely going to take home an Oscar and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Ariana DeBose also taking home an Oscar. But I think what a lot of we're going to see is that energy, We're going to see a lot of high spirits. We're going to see an award show that people want to watch. And I think over the past few years, everything was forced to shake itself up and hopefully it's all for the best. Absolutely. But do you think also, I mean given the fact that we didn't get a globes this year, do you almost think that now the Sags has surpassed the globes now, it's sort of the next best awards show after the Oscars. And do you think maybe because there's so much awards fatigue besides the people like me and you, that maybe we only need two big award shows like this. You know what I do think that the SaG awards took that role and we've kind of been so tired and and unimpressed by the golden globes in the last couple of years. So I don't know that the golden globes will be gone, I think that if they come back, they're going to have to step it up. Um but I think the Sag awards are going to have a new place and I don't think it's going to be that. Oh, that first, that first intro to awards season, like the dress rehearsal for awards season now it's going to hold its own and it's going to be one that people are going to tune into regardless of what else is happening. Who was your favorite dress last night? Out of curiosity? Oh my gosh, okay, Cate Blanchett, can we talk about that plunging neckline? I also was obsessed with lady gaga's look. I was a little bit surprised that she didn't do Gucci, but she looks amazing. Right? I mean, I feel it was, was that Karma? No, she wasn't Jessica Chastain deserved that with um, but and Kerry Washington who was not nominated, but everyone is talking about Kerry Washington and I love to that we're going to see color from this carpet. We're going to see that moving forward. And speaking of the carpet, the big shock billy and um, Naomi Watts are a couple and nobody knew 2017 and this was like their moment. They stepped out. It was just like, oh, hey, here we are. We're a couple. I love when that gets broken on the carpet and nobody and it and it's never even announced, those are like the best stories. That's amazing.
