Bob the Drag Queen Talks 'We're Here' & 'RuPaul's Drag Race'

All right, well we all know bob the drag queen as the winner of season eight of Rupaul's drag race. Well now the comedian is the star and series producer of HBO's we're here and bob alongside fellow drag queens, Yoriko O'hara and Shan Djula recruit local residents to participate in drag shows and inspire their drag kids to express who they truly are in front of family and friends. That's all well going purse first while they're doing it and I got the chance is by the way, if you don't get that reference, you have not been watching enough drag race. I got the chance to sit down with bob to talk all about the series, Rupaul's drag race and so much more take a look. So what's happening in this next season of the show? That's different maybe than what we've seen in the last two seasons? I think the political climate has changed a lot since season one. First of all season one was pre pre pandemic, Pre pon de replay, you know what I mean? And then season two was during the Panda Express and season three is in this like we're kind of getting back into the world kind of not. So it's been really interesting to just be back in the world, especially experiencing how some places are more lockdown, less lockdown. Do you ever get nervous going into some of the places you're going because you're going into like rural stretches of the country that normally are not the most friendly to the LGBT community to the community. Um You okay, so you know there was an episode where we're in granbury texas, right? Maybe felt less than safe. There were some moments where we were threatened veil, like vaguely threatened. Um and that does feel unsafe, but we have a very we have a security team and we're not alone. You see, just down the street behind the camera is like 20 people there to help us and keep us safe. So we were never we're never truly. That's good. Thank God for that. But what does this show mean to you? I mean, this show, if this show is making me go to tears, I can only imagine how it makes you feel when you're making these people feel so empowered about themselves during this process. Well, I don't think we're making them, but we're not making like, honestly, we're just unearthing stuff that's already there. We're not creating things, We're not changing. These towns were just amplifying voices that are already in these towns. You know what I mean? So we're not like we're here to make grand, you know, a great town. Um we're just here to amplify voices that feel that they're being muted and feel like they're being quiet. The people, they're actually making themselves great. They're making themselves feel good and we're just there to facilitate you have really turned your winning Rupaul's drag race into this incredible career. My Yes, yes. Winning, winning number eight. We'll get to that by the way in a little bit, but drag race season eight top one Top one, which by the way blew away the competition. You were so good that year? I agree. Um, but you've been a to capitalize on purse first and all these other things and different things. For instance, you're in Cartoon Network as this guest spot as the purse in craig of the Creek. Yeah, I played the dookie bag. Yeah. So what was that like? Well, I got a call and they were like, we want you to be in craig of the Creek and I hadn't heard of craig of the Creek cause I have, I have a niece and a nephew. And um, and then they were like, we want you to play when they described, we want you to put, you can hear the truth is I was headed to this gig. I thought it was an audition, but when I got there like no girl, you, you already have the part, that's the best agent never gives me those. They're like, it's written for you and I'm like, okay, I showed up. And so what you see this performance was like, I hadn't even had time to, it was just like, oh, I have the role here. It is. It was really funny. And by the way, the, so first, I mean 3.4 million streams and now you have a new song out called black and fans are loving this by the way. But it's a different take because one fan, we saw a tweet from them saying this song literally made me tear up. How did you sort of arrive at such a powerful song from purse first? Well you know I am, I'm a comedian and I fancy myself a lit, you know what I mean? So I have a song in my heart and but I'm also an activist too. So sometimes, but if you listen to black, there are some lyrics in there that are still kind of funny. Um but also is powerful is talking about my experience as a black person in America which is like what it means to reconcile being black and being american and being queer all at the same time. Talk about intersectionality. What I mean? So I, you know we have some, I have some lyrics that they really tickled me but also some lyrics that feel really powerful like the opening lyric cause I'm black with the capital Black, you know what I mean? Um I'm of course joined by some amazing artists but sit who's basically right here in new york city. They live over in Brooklyn. I'm not gonna docks them there and then Ocean kelly who was a really amazing rapper based out of Atlanta Georgia. Okay, so then it was directed by Marvin Brown who was one of the creative directors of we're here. Oh even better. Even better. Okay, so season eight winner of Rupaul's drag race however you were not part of the All winners group, which I thought was really crazy. I was not jinx monsoon ended up winning. But did you ever think that I could have taken jinx? Yeah, yeah, of course. But I also have a lot of absurd confidence. I think I would have beaten Rupaul. Yes, but also clearly has a thing for comedy queens, which is why jinx one this thing. Yeah, I mean, I would I would have done well, I was not there, I was filming, We're here. So it's not it's not like it's not like I was just like uh they just forgot to call you. You know, I don't I don't work in a world of wonder, so I don't know, I don't know what they're casting process was right, but randy and Fenton needs to give you the call. So I've not worked there in probably six or seven years, but that being said, I'm in great standing with them and I love so if there's a second all winners bob better be a part of it, then we'll see, you know, I don't know if competing, I don't know if I want to compete anymore, competing is really fun when I was back with big when I was competing in 2016, it was very fun, but I think in a in a slightly different place. Okay, I'm into it. One other thing, I'm really into this new season of Canada versus the world, they are doing a drag. They have Justin Trudeau on even though he's not getting a drag makeover, but he's appearing on it. If they there was one celebrity politician, you would love to give a drag makeover to who would you do it? My answer changes all the time. Politics are changing as they are. And I just think that nancy Pelosi is really sickening and the fact that has been on room quite a few times that she is pushing 80 and still in like a seven inch stiletto is bananas, right? You know what I mean? So, I would love to see nancy Pelosi snatched plucked pulled nancy. Pelosi would make a good big special thanks to bob the drag queen to be sure to watch.
