CDC Expands Surveillance at Major Airports

The US Centers for disease control and prevention announced that it will expand its infectious disease surveillance programs at major US airports. The traveler based genomic surveillance program will now cover more than 30 pathogens including the flu RSV and other respiratory viruses. The program led by the CDC S Travelers Health branch was introduced in 2021 when the CDC started collecting nasal samples from travelers coming from international locations. This volunteer surveillance program currently operates COVID-19 surveillance is seven major international airports in the US. The program's expansion will include Boston Logan International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Dulles International Airport in Washington DC and John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.
