Celebrating Google's 25th Birthday

Google turns 25 today and it's hard to imagine what our lives were like before the tech giant changed how we search things online. The business has expanded to so many different aspects. It's pioneering the next generation of artificial intelligence. It's also raising legal and ethical questions about the future of tech China. New senior reporter Michelle Castillo is here to talk about how much Google has grown and what's next. So Michelle talk about Google and how it's evolved with the changing times in the last few decades. Well, Hannah Google has been around for 2.5 decades and so much has happened since the company launched in 1998 which changed how it developed products. So let me highlight a few things I found interesting. So if you think about it, many of its features have been in reaction to cultural and historical events. So let's start with this green dress that Jennifer Lopez wore to the Grammys in 2000. When people were searching for it online, they couldn't find an image of it. So this is actually where the idea for Google image was born and it was launched in 2001 in a more serious vein. This events of September 11th, 2001 led to the creation of Google News. In 2002, the company wanted a hub to host important headlines from breaking news and notable events. Other things are a Google translate was launched in 2006. And if you're curious what the first languages were, that was Arabic and English, now it supports more than 100 languages with 24 added just in the last year alone. And in 2019, Google launched bird or bidirectional encoder representations from transformers, a mouthful. But what you need to know is it's a neural network that use a language based model to understand the full context of a word. It's basically the start of what we used for the language based artificial intelligence systems we use today and misinformation online especially around elections led to the adding of about this result. In 2021 this was to give context about search results and that includes sources and accuracy. So all these current events actually led to a lot of these development. I just learned a few things. That's incredible the accomplishment. So we have to talk about Google facing lawsuits over concerns that created a monopoly when it comes to search engines and making the default for different phone manufactures jurors. So how will this affect the company moving forward? Well as I pointed, there's a lot changing in the field of tech. So this is a new development. This is going to be the largest tech monopoly trial since the Department of Justice sued Microsoft about two decades ago. And with Amazon also getting in hot water with the FTC, it shows the government is starting to crack down on big tech. So Google is going to have to prove that by making these agreements to be the default search engine on different phone. It was aiding consumers with a utility and block not blocking competition. But the company has already faced monopoly concerns in Europe and has had to pay hefty fines. It's also set to face another lawsuit in the eastern district of Virginia. This one is over a monopoly it holds in digital advertising. It is the world's largest digital advertising platform. You and I have discussed Google's Bar before. Of course, it's a competitor for T GB. It's also a language based artificial intelligence intelligence system. So with so many concerns about A I ethics could Google help or hurt in this area. Well, you know, Bard, like many A I systems uses public information to feed it systems and learn from them. Let's take this recent example. So Bard is using conversations, it's having to learn and improve. This could help evolve the field of these type of chat based systems and make them more efficient. However, there are concerns over privacy. So they've actually found that Google Bar, chatbot conversations are starting to appear in search results. And with the field of A I changing so rapidly, many of its leaders including open A I, Sam Altman, whose company created Chat GPT have become vocal over concerns that we may be moving too fast and with no regulation in place for now, they could be right.
