Today is World Emoji Day and to celebrate new senior reporter Michelle Castillo is here to tell us all about the holiday and everything else in the emoji verse Michelle. Great to see you. So why is today World Emoji Day? What is it today? Is World Emoji Day? Hannah? Because, well, the emoji declared it. So take a look at that calendar. Emoji you have, you'll see. It actually says July 17th. So that's why they picked today. And now this holiday kicked off in 2014 and it was created by Emoji Pedia founder Jeremy Burge and it's celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. So since Emoji Pedia was founded in 2013, we've used emojis a whopping 724% more and it's estimated that 92 to 95% of the world uses emoji. So pretty much everyone, you know, so big question. Now, I have a favorite emoji. I'm sure you do too. What are the most popular emojis that people are using? Well, can I get a drum roll, please? Because this year's top five emojis according to emoji are so far and I had to find the official names for this face with tears of joy, which is, you know, the face with the tears rolling on the floor, laughing face, the red heart, folded hands and the loudly crying face, which is the one that has the tears that are sobbing. Now as for celebrities, they are not like us at all. The most commonly used celebrity emoji is actually the purple heart. And when it comes to hearts, that was the number three for us, we like the red one. So the commoners are picking the most common one. Now, you might be curious about how times have changed. So 10 years ago, the face of tea face with tears of joy was still the top emoji. So we're still using it after all these years. However, rounding up the top 5, 10 years ago was the smiling face with hard eyes, the face blowing a hard kiss, the OK hand and still the loudly crying face. So as you've seen several of our top emojis have fallen out of favor. But over the last decade, we've added quite a few emojis sir. Lexicon, the most popular newcomers are the rolling on floor laughing Emoji face, the smiling face with hearts around it and the pleading big eyes, black face. So while we have cocktails and dogs and plant emojis, now we're still stuck on those yellow faces to show our emotions. And of course, some emojis have fallen out of favor. For example, while I admit I use the face of tears, Emoji quite a lot. It Genz says it's a bit dated. Also, the thumbs up emoji can be seen as a passive aggressive sign but us all time, we still tend to use it to say we got the message. It's still better than texting back. Kay after all. Whenever our gen Z coworkers told me here when I give them the thumbs up Emoji, when I send it to him, he thinks I'm sending him the finger. Apparently you should not use the thumbs up emoji. Who knew? Do you have a favorite Emoji Michelle? I do have a favorite emoji, but I do have a little bit of struggle with it and I OK, Hannah, we've talked about this in the past. So my favorite emoji is the shrugging girl. However, I can never get the right skin tone and hair because they only have certain looks. So I tend to use the Asian girl which has black hair, the girl that with the crown that you see. Um And but the problem is whenever I use the thumbs of emoji, which I know we're not supposed to be using, it tends to show a super white hand which I'm a little bit tanner than usual. So there's still problems with the different skin tones on emojis. You could always revert to using the yellow, but that's also apparently offensive and people are trying to move away from that. So, yes. So my skin tone doesn't actually match when I'm doing other emoji signs. But I do use that shrug. Grow quite a bit because who knows? I'm glad you mentioned skin tone. My issue is how they're not any interracial couples. Oh, yeah, I could. Same problem. Yes. I mean, you are right. Our husbands don't look like us. You can't find that emoji anywhere. So I think we should need a little bit more adaptation. You know, I message does allow you to do different faces, but you could always use an emoji that can express your feelings.
