well, if you're living in a city, chances are you're a bit used to navigating around a small space. The average apartment size in new york for example is just 820 square feet according to axios metrics. So the big question is, how do you style a small space? A new exhibit called apartment therapy? Small Cool. NyC has some tips for us in cheddar news. Michelle, Costello is here to break down how we can still think big when the space is small Michelle. We're here today at apartment therapy Small Cool NyC which is a 12 room exhibit dedicated to decorating small spaces and each room behind me is only 100 and 20 square feet or less. And if you want to know how to decorate your small space, which happens to a lot of people who live here in new york or in cities across the US. We're here with Maxwell Ryan, he's the Ceo and founder of apartment therapy. All right, Maxwell, how do you make your space feel bigger? Alright, so we're packed with tips, the tip in this room or one of them is, she is Jenna plant has used bare paint to paint vertical stripes up the walls. It's a little extreme. Not everyone would think of this, but what she's doing here, the vertical stripes make the walls seem taller, the ceiling more farther away and they will make the room feel bigger. You can do it just with paint. So you know what's really interesting is a dining room is a very big rarity in new york city. I do have a dining table, but it's also my office. So we like to call this the home office. That's also a dining table. Well, that seems very familiar to me, but let's move over to another room. That might seem a little more familiar to city dwellers. So this is the living room slash office slash everything room. So how do you make this small space work for you? All right. So this is by Christiane Lemieux and this is a very different approach. You'll notice she's got two rather large, generous pieces of furniture in this small room, but she's scrubbed out everything else by and large in a small space. If you use larger scale pieces very, very few of them. They'll give the room a generous feeling, a sort of a luxurious feeling and can make it feel bigger scale large and small can really emphasize the space of the room. In addition, uh she's got a sofa here that she designed that does double duty. It's a sofa with a side table. The whole thing is on a plinth. A lot of people love this. It was surprising that they noticed it, but your side table, right at a low height, which doesn't take up a lot of space. You know, one thing I also noticed was those curtains start pretty high, does that also help lengthen the room? That was, that was by design. In fact, when we hung these, we hung them too low and she came in and she said no no no, raise them up, raise them up. They've got to be as close to the ceiling as possible because in a small room, the further you get to the ceiling, the more you're gonna get that vertical, the bigger the or the taller the room is going to feel and therefore the bigger it's going to feel as well.
