Cheddar Paws: ASPCA Highlights Adoption Opportunities as Kitten Season Heats Up

Welcome to Cheddar News. I'm Hanna Doba from Chatter Studios in New York City and I'm Baker. And you know, every year through late March through October, thousands of kittens, Hanna are abandoned in New York. Uh city shelters and animal lovers community have dubbed this annual six month period as kitten season. And with this influx of kittens, it means that shelters become overwhelmed and resources are even more limited. So, of course, we brought in our friend Larry Skill as is with a PC A to come on Cheddar pause and highlight one cool cat. She's got winter. This might be the tiniest animal we've ever had in this segment. So before we get to more about kitten season, tell us about little bit. Yes. Uh So winter is four weeks old. Uh She is staying at a kitten nursery right now in New York City and she's gonna go to a foster home which is gonna grow healthy and strong until she can be uh stay and be made available for adoption. I'm glad you mentioned fostering. How does the A S PC A help pet owners who might need financial assistance? Any services or programs that we should know about. We do, we do have several facilities and mobile veterinary clinics across the country. Um, where are we in, in the, the goal of having this, uh, these facilities is to help, uh, pet owners who are struggling to keep their pets at home. Right. So Valeria, what can our viewers do to sort of help if they're not able to adopt it? Are there other ways that they can sort of help out in this situation? But I think one of the greatest way, uh the great ways to help would be fostering, right? Fostering a guy like, like a girl like, like this, um, fostering animals is life saving, right? Because you take an animal out of a shelter and opens up a space for it all and another animal in need. Um It also for animals that are a little bit older than this, those populations that tend to stay a little bit longer in the shelter like senior cat. So have like a little more of a more medical or behavioral complicated picture. It help us create a home report on that animal that we can pass on to the future adopters and make the transition of that animal easier when they go home. And when is so cute. She's four weeks, four weeks, I've literally had things longer in the crock pot. So if you want to adopt her, what do they need to know? Well, she's not ready for adoption. Yet still, she's too young. Um, but if they would like to adopt a kitten or an adult cat or a dog, they can go to our, uh, website, which is a S PC A dot org slash adopt and check a list of all the animals that we have up for adoption. And we know, uh, obviously as we're talking about fostering really important right now, but just how difficult is it right now at shelters in terms of overcrowding, in terms of too many pets that we have because not a lot of people are rescuing or fostering right now. Yeah, we are in the middle of a kitten season, right? So, as you said earlier, so this is the moment where all the, well, most of the shelters across the nation are experiencing a very sharp intake in the number of uh of cats and like a nice, um I would say like a curious piece of information is that that most people don't know, it's uh more than three million cats and shelters across the United States every year. So I would say any time of the year, it's a good time to adopt a cat, but now through June, which is a shelter month, um it's a, it's a very good time. We're partnering actually with he to um bring awareness to those populations that tend to stay a little bit longer. Malaria.
