Cheddar Reports: How El Niño Could Affect You This Summer

It's only June. I can't believe it. And already scientists are saying that it could be the hottest year on record even as warming effects of El Nino will continue to strengthen into the fall and winter. So here with more news, senior reporter Chloe, a thank you so much for joining us Chloe because we need to know more about these record breaking temperatures. What can you tell us? And while global average temperatures for the month of June are almost two F above temperatures taken in the same time frame dating back to 1979. That's according to the Guardian, this follows a pattern of gradual warming that some scientists believe could make 2023 the warmest year on record topping the previous record holder which was 2016. Now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA said the world had its third warmest May of all time and the warmest for North and South America setting a 174 year record. Now, heat waves have baked everywhere from southern Europe and northern Africa to Siberia. Heat in Canada contributed to the wildfires that infamously cast their smoky shadow across New York city. No, even so, not everyone is convinced that this will be the hottest year yet. Noa puts the odds at just 12% but says it's very likely it could make the top 10 or even the top five hottest years on record. Shannon. Ok. So can you explain how will El Nino factor into all of this? Sure. Well, according to NOA, the effects of the El Nino weather, weather pattern were already starting to be felt as early as May and they're expected to continue strengthening into fall and winter of 2023 to 2024 El Nino cycles every 2 to 7 years and is characterized by warmer than usual sea surface temperatures and higher winds over the Atlantic. When combined with climate change, researchers expect a stronger El Nino event, this could mean more rain, more extreme heat and droughts and bigger storms. And in the context of an already very warm year, it could bring hotter temperatures than expected. According to Noa, there's a 56% chance of a strong El Nino between November and January and an 84% chance that it will be at least stronger than moderate. Ok. So o ocean tips are also record highs right now. What does this mean? While ocean temperatures have broken records for May, some regions are experiencing temperatures of up to seven F higher than average warmer ocean waters can contribute to more powerful tropical storms and impact marine life by bleaching coral reefs, eating toxic algae blooms and just making certain regions less hospitable to their native marine populations and warming oceans and atmospheres are also contributing to melting sea ice, which of course puts coastal communities and ecosystems at risk as well.
