China has restricted exports of high tech metals, gallium and uranium, both metals critical to manufacturing chips and other tech. The move is in response to the US blocking China from access to advanced chips and persuading allies in the Netherlands and Japan to limit exports of chip making tools. Now, China is the biggest global source of these metals. And according to the US Geological Survey, the US gets about half of its supply of both metals directly from China. The new restriction comes ahead of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit to Beijing tomorrow as part of the Biden administration's efforts through five relations with China.
