Colby Minifie Chats All About Body-Swap Comedy 'Homebody'

well, a new body swapping comedy is putting a fresh spin on the classic story following the footsteps of films like freaky friday and big homebodies inspired by the filmmaker's own gender queer childhood. And I sat down with the star of the film called The Menifee to discuss her unique role in the deeper meaning behind it. Take a look so Colby, I'm so happy to have you here. Let's talk about home body. It's about a little boy who gets to live as a woman for a day when he sends his spirit into the babysitter's body. I mean that sounds like a freaky friday mashup I didn't think I needed, but I'm so excited about it. So tell us what's the deeper meaning behind this film. Um yeah, it's like a it's like a big slash freaky friday gender swap thing. And I really just think it's about uh your own feelings of identity and getting to explore yourself and being allowed to explore another gender for a little while and parents and society and young people being okay with that. And uh what it's like to live in the world as a person these days with all the kinds of ideas we have about gender running around. I love that. I honestly, I love that so much. And by the way the writer and the director of this film said the story is very much inspired by their own gender queer childhood. I mean sort of how does Self Discovery sort of play a role in all of this? Yes. Self Discovery is the movie in my in in my opinion, I think it's uh how does Self Discovery play a role in all of it? I mean, I have it was funny because when I was going to the premiere of the movie in L. A. I was like, what do I wear to this? What do I feel comfortable in? How do I feel my my best self? And it's often in what we consider to be male clothing. Like I'm wearing overalls right now, while I have a more feminine top on like, you know, I feel most comfortable in pants. And so I wore a painter's jumpsuit to the premiere. And it's something as tiny and simple as that is kind of like what the story is about, how we feel comfortable in our selves and in this society uh in the kind of gender fluid uh space we live in and those constraints and how to break out of those constraints. And yeah, it's like a coming of age story and that with that. I know I love it. I love it. By the way. If I was at the premiere, I'd be wearing a pussy boa blouse, I'd be doing all of that for this because I would have a reason to your character with the spirit of this young boy plays dress up and has like these awkward run ins with their friends and I believe your mother also, how does this situation, you know that the nine year old finds himself in help them sort of understand their complicated feelings about gender and all of that stuff. Yeah, I mean it's funny with the with he's trying to pass as the babysitter and he doesn't really understand Melanie's life outside of babysitting johnny outside of babysitting him. And so Melanie is her period for example, and he's like, why do I have a piece of cotton in my vagina? Like what is this that hasn't been explained to him? Um and his mother, he's like trying to pass as a babysitter to his mother, he says I love you to her and then she's like that's odd for the babysitter to say to me, same with the friend, it's like Melanie's life is full and uh she's got goals and she's got an entire world outside of babysitting this young boy and he has no idea what that is, but he's very curious about it and and in interacting with these people, he learns that she is a real person and that she exists outside of his life. I think this is so amazing and I know especially a lot of us uh you know, growing up, you know, as a gay boy, like I there's so much of this I could identify with as a young kid watching this. So I think this is amazing that this film has been created. I do want to talk about one of your other projects that we know you very well and the boys, you play Ashley and season three ended earlier this year. The big question, will life get any better for her in season four? Because it has to I think it gets better in some ways. There are some things that are a little uh spicy for her. Um Yeah, it's a little it's it's we're about to film a scene that I'm really excited about um but it also gets a lot worse for her in a lot of ways. There's no easy way that she can live this job. She just kind of sold her soul to the devil in a lot of ways and it's hard for her to continue on without making a lot of morally ambiguous choices. Um So yeah, we'll see, we'll see. That's about all I can say right now. Okay, okay. Because I know, I know, I know you're sworn to secrecy on these things, but by the way, we know Rosemary Dewitt is gonna be joining the cast alongside Simon Pegg, who will be returning to the show as as Huey's dad. What do you want to see happen in season four? I want to see him. It's weird because I'm working on it right? I'm in Toronto right now. So what I want to see happen is all happening and it's all spoilers. I want to see, I mean, for Ashley, like, I want to see more of her personal life. And we get to see a little bit more of that this year, which is very exciting. Um And that's about all I can.
