Comedian Adam Ray Talks 'Young Rock,' Jay Leno, & His Favorite Podcast Guests

Adam Ray is returning as Vince McMahon in season three of NBC sitcom Young Rock, which follows the formative years of superstar Dwayne the rock johnson, It's so hilarious and young rock actor wears many hats. He's also a stand up comedian and the host of the popular podcast about last night, which has welcomed big name guests like Sandra, Bullock, melissa McCarthy and Bill Brown. Yeah, that's just to name a few and he joins us right now at, hey, thanks so much for this. Alright, so season three of Young Rock premiered on friday. You returned as Vince McMahon who was the Ceo and chairman of the W. W. E. For 30 years. So what's it been like to portray the man who's considered the pioneer of pro wrestling here in the US. It's been pretty cool aside from playing the cowardly line in the fifth grade. My mom says my best role to date. Um, but yeah, she's a little biased. No, it's, you know, it's uh, playing somebody that's been such a force in, um, you know, in a sport like this is pretty, pretty daunting. But you know, Dwayne was pretty generous with giving me a lot of stories and their, their whole staff and showrunner and uh, and, and writers are, have been around vince for quite some time. So I really, without meeting the guy himself was able to get a lot of, uh, of insight and enough to, to really, you know, go out there and play with and then, and then it's just about, you know, trying to get as close as you can without doing an impression vocally and then um, you know body wise, I tried to beef up, you know, as much as possible. You guys didn't say anything when I popped on camera. So that lets me know I got more work to do, you know? Okay. So you've mentioned you've actually wanted to meet Vince McMahon and that meet up has I guess been in the works for some time now. Has it happened? Have you actually met him? What was it like? Well, I mean we matched on Tinder like an hour ago. So that's the closest, yeah, that's the closest it's come. Uh but uh no, I'm sure it'll happen. You know, they're working on a, I think a documentary on netflix has been for some time about him and I'm sure when that happens I'll, you know, hopefully get to go go check that out and and meet him. But I mean I, I, you know, it's funny, I haven't met Vince but I got to meet jay Leno when I played j on on pam and Tommy on hulu show and I was walking down the hallway of this comedy club and he's in the back and my mom was like, you gotta tell jay that you play him on tv. And I was like mom, he doesn't care about that. He's, you know, more concerned about what car he's gonna buy next or maybe his act for that night and she's like, you gotta tell him, I know what I'm talking about. You know, moms do know best. My mom, you know these days and she's, she's a gangster. She's ago, she did the single mom thing. She raised me by herself. She she did so many things nobody asked her to do. She, she um, you know, sign me, you know, paid for for all my athletic uniforms with for jobs. She bought me condoms which which you know, that's a good, knows what's best. Listen to my and by the way she's, she's right. You need to tell jay Leno about your performance. Have you had an opportunity to meet up with him to tell him to be interviewed? I have to have it real quick. Let me finish that condom joke. So she bought me condoms. And uh and and she goes, she goes, uh, is this the right move? I go, I don't know mom. It is awkward. I am almost nine, but they are magnum so I'm glad you believe in me. And so yeah, yeah, I just, I got halfway in and so then she goes, we'll go talk to jay. And I said, okay great. Uh and he uh he was like, look at the guy who played me on tv and then I was like, oh man, was it, was it an awful portrayal or move back to Seattle but was like, It was good. It wasn't cartoon. I heard it was grounded. I'm not gonna watch it. I heard it was good and uh gave me a stamp of approval and that was cool. Yeah, that was awesome. Let's talk about your podcast about last night. It's featured so many big name celebrities. You've released nearly 700 episodes. Do you have a favorite interview or episode from throughout that run? Oh man. You know, it's just uh Dana Carvey is a good buddy of mine and he's done it maybe nine times now and for a while there he wasn't doing any other podcast, but about last night, which was awesome. He is uh definitely up there because it's, I'll have a map for every guest, but we always go off the rails and I don't even hit maybe two questions out of 20 or so because he's somebody that's just so good off the cuff. And, and you know, the best interviews are the ones where you're not checking the notes because you're so dialed in and engaged and, and genuinely curious which I am about people, especially if the ones that I'm that I'm chatting with on the show. Um Sandra Bullock's done it twice and she hasn't, you know done one other podcast. So those are always extra special because she's been a homie from when we did the heat. Um you know, 10 years ago and, and that's like talking to a close friend. So it's like that's really easy, but then also you know, certain moments will happen and I'm like, oh man, like that's really she's so funny. I forget that she's also you know, american sweetheart. Um And then you are so funny too. We can't wait to see you on tour. It's coming up soon. So everybody go out and get tickets to his comedy tour. We really appreciate it, We really appreciate you.
