Comedian Dane Cook Talks New Special 'Above It All' and How He Views His Past Success

Dane Cook is out with a new comedy special titled Above It All released through the social media platform moment. I sat down with the comedian to hear all about it. Take a look, Let's talk about your new comedy special above It all literally filmed in your own backyard. You turned your home. It's an intimate amphitheater is what I'm hearing. Why was this the right setting for this special picture It like this beautiful view overlooking the twinkling lights of Hollywood, a view that when I was a young boy watching the movie E. T. And he came through the bushes and he saw that glistening treasure trove that was California and I and I all these years later bought myself a beautiful home overlooking the luxurious city of holly good. And I'm not even kidding when I say 12 years ago when I moved in here, I said someday I'm gonna film my best stand up comedy special ever, right on this porch. This is so iconic on so many levels. You actually said during the second night of taping helicopter flew over your house about 40 minutes into the show. Any other challenges or was that it? A lot of Okay, so challenge number challenge number one was we had to shuttle an audience to my home that both did not know that they were coming to my home and they didn't know they were coming to the filming of a special directed by the great marty kolner. So everything had to be pretty covert and we shuttled people up from an empty parking lot. A lot of people were very confused. I remember talking to one guy after the show, he was like, I was starting to get worried I was being kidnapped and I didn't know this was legit. So that was, that was one thing that was a little funky. But the thing that happened on the second night was the audience finally left the show is amazing. We're all feeling celebratory. And then about an hour later my audience coordinator calls me and he goes, I just double checked the numbers and it looks like there's one person that maybe still on your property. So be careful what happened. What happened was now I've got a flashlight in my Tiktok recording so that I can capture maybe the scariest heckler moment that I'd ever been a part of, but nobody was on the property and I will tell you that after that second show I turned to my fiance Kelsey and I said I captured lightning in a bottle and I cannot wait for people to see this. We cannot wait to see it. You've been in the game for so long. You said this is your best special yet. How do you think your comedy has evolved over the past few years? Yeah, I mean in some ways, some things that have stayed the same thankfully because I I think I got very, very fortunate early in my career to like stumble into some early abilities that, that I just honed over the years. Love energy. I love storytelling. I like when the both are kind of comments to each other physical with great language um where it's evolved is wanting to be more introspective, but without losing the L. P. M. S. That's laughs per minute in the, in the comedy jargon, I didn't want to lose that. And I noticed that I watched some performers as they, You know, went further down the world in their career and they might have lost a little bit of the funny, even though they gained some great transparency and I was like, I want to work on a routine that finds that middle ground that still can be hard hitting laughter, but let people know a little bit more about me now at this 0.30 years into my career. So why was the moment the right platform for you to release your new special now? I think because of this, because we're talking about it and it was something a little sexy and cool and it was not just somebody saying go to my website and the thing is on there, um, everything's calm, you know, competition these days, you know, you gotta fight the algorithm, you have to not only bring something meaningful, but that's only halfway I used to be able to post and that was the full delivery. Now you have to engage, you have to in real time cultivate where that stream is moving towards. So very, very um integral part of the release was moment because they're in their moment. They're breaking out in so many great ways with great artists and I was excited that we could meet and help each other out to push the conversation forward according to billboard. You have two of the top eight best selling comedy albums of all time. First I want to say retaliation at seven harmful if swallowed at eight, both with over a million albums sold. That's so impressive. You were also the second comedian ever to sell out Madison Square Garden. So let's face it for a period of time. You were the biggest comedian on the planet day and you were, how do you view that in some orchestra music right there. These are facts, right, facts are facts. So how do you view that period in your life now? Oh with nothing but absolute like giddiness enthusiasm. I got to show my parents, everything that I, all these things that I dreamed of. That sounded pretty ridiculous when I was, you know, a young introvert without really the ability to even figure out how do I put 15 people in a room, let alone 20,000 people at, at one of these incredible arenas. So I look back very lovingly and I also look back with lot of gratitude because those fans are now coming to my shows with their kids now. I'm meeting that next generation that maybe only saw employee of the month there dan in real life or planes. And it's very, very cool to feel like I'm now the old bull on the hill. But I get to do what I do at a pedigree I always hoped that I would accomplish. And then now getting to meet a whole new generation of comedy fans that are into my stuff, He seems so nice special.
