Jodie Emery, Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis Culture, joins Cheddar to discuss a recent study done by the University of Texas which shows that, in areas where cannabis is legal, crime has not increased, contrary to popular belief. Using crime data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, the researchers studied rates for homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and auto theft, teasing out an effect for the passing of medical marijuana laws. None of the seven types of crime increased with the legalization of medical marijuana. Emery also says that when cannabis dispensaries closed, the crime in that area up went. She compares it to alcohol, saying consuming cannabis is less dangerous than getting drunk off alcohol.
