Ben "DrLupo" Lupo said in an interview with Cheddar Sports that Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment's new battle royale game, requires more precision and "awareness" for successful playing than its competitor, Epic Games' smash hit Fortnite.
"You have to rely on the structure that's there," Lupo said of Apex Legends. "Your awareness has to be, in my opinion, even higher. In Fortnite, if I get shot at, I can just build up a one-by-one, I can just sprout the Taj Mahal out of nothing on the spot and keep myself alive."
Even without Fortnite's iconic building system, Apex Legends has managed to record impressive numbers since its release earlier this month. The game recorded a staggering 10 million players within 72 hours of its release, and 25 million within a week. Its first major tournament, part of the Twitch Rivals series, logged over 8 million hours viewed on the platform in just one day, according to a report from The Esports Observer. That tally is more than Fortnite has ever recorded on a single day, leading some to dub the game a "Fortnite killer."
Lupo, who participated in the second wave of Twitch Rivals, also highlighted the mechanical differences between the two games. "Fortnite has a bloom mechanic and a little bit of recoil," he said, referencing the tendency of guns in Fortnite to target a general range, rather than pinpoint a specific area. "On the Apex side, if you're [aiming down sights], there's no bloom."
To Lupo, the combination of precision shooting and a lack of building makes for a drastically different playing experience. "In Apex... you have to use the doors and sometimes even the bodies of your opponents to avoid getting shot," he said. "It's a very different mindset, in my opinion."
Despite Apex's massive popularity, the game doesn't seem to have killed off Fortnite just yet ー Epic recently reported a record non-special-event concurrent player high of 7.6 million players.
