Ed Mylett Talks New Show 'Change with Ed Mylett'

and welcome back Friends between Bells and baker Machado and new york Change with Ed Millet is a brand new show following the entrepreneur and inspirational speaker. This is the coaches everyday people who are struggling with different aspects of life from grief to body image to relationships and more so pleased now to be joined by the host Ed Millet. Ed good to have you here, so good to be back with you, good to see you, Yes, you as well. So first and foremost we know you're a best selling author, your books have made it to the number one spot on a lot of charts, so what challenges now go into creating a show that's just as impactful as your books, a big challenge because it's a format that I've never had before, you know, sitting there, it's almost like a modern day dr Phil type setup, but to be really honest with you, once we got in the group of doing the show, it's something I've done forever. When Nbcuniversal approached me to do this, you know, I've been coaching, been lucky enough to coach some of the top entrepreneurs and athletes and politicians, ceos in the world, they're like, hey, why don't we do this with everyday people, because that's where real change occurs. And so once we got in the group, it was awesome and the show has really got huge reviews and it's really changing people's lives, not just the people on the show, but people who watch it who struggle with similar problems are learning the tools of how to change their own lives. So I'm real proud of it. Yeah, and one episode in particular that I watched ad was with Ryan Lochte in particular, talking really about sort of the struggle and all the pressure that he was under as an Olympian. I mean we remember how much he was basically talked about every single day during the olympics. So what else did Ryan Lochte sort of reveal to you in this really incredible conversation? Well, like a lot of people, he had tied his identity to what he did as a career, not who he was as a man. And so we have this often times in our lives, we'll tie our identity to our relationship or the money we make or what we do for a living in Ryan's case when swimming one away, he went away and didn't really know who he was and once your first dream ends, how do you rebuild your life and have a vision for the future? So we helped him sort of discover that his identity was really is who he was as a man and then to create a vision that came out of a purpose in his life, not just something he was talented in doing. And it's really interesting to me, is a really famous guy and one of the best athletes of all time, but the lessons in the episode apply to anybody in every part of their life. If you've had a relationship end or a business fail, you know, who are you now, what's the rest of your life look like and how do you create it and how do you get there? And we do that with Ryan and he's flourishing right now. So I'm real proud of him and it's really a riveting episode to get on the inside and see how that change happens. Yeah, and on top of that, I mean, he talks about dealing with depression, which I can only imagine when you're dealing with all of this pressure to bring home the gold to continue to perform at this incredibly high level the depression and all the mental health anxieties that come with that, he's just part of a long list of athletes that are discussing mental health. Do you sort of feel like that is good in the sense that it is almost de stigmatizing and adding two more people to want to seek out mental health, That's exactly what it does and I'm so proud of him and it takes courage when you're in the public eye to say, hey, I struggle with certain things and the truth is, in my life, I found most people struggle with mental health on some end of the spectrum, all the way from severe depression, like, where Ryan was like, what am I gonna do with my life do I want to live? That's one end of the spectrum, all the way to waking up with anxiety in the morning, you know, worrying, having fear in your life, these are mental health issues and you know, if you break your leg, you go see a doctor get help, you know, in in in life if our mind is hurting our heart is hurting, were shamed into not getting support and I hope that that episode and the other ones I have say this is very normal, I'd say 90 plus percent of people struggle with some level of mental health at some time in their life and even watching this right now, most people are struggling with something. They've got a fear of worry, they're down anxiety maybe there's anger like what Leanne was just discussing lands a dear friend of mine that took courage for Leanne to share that with you about, you know, the anger issues that she's uncovered in her life and we all have them and there's answers to those problems and I really think the show will give people a lot of them. Yeah. And do you feel though people though have the power to change a lot of this though because we all go through our own problems, you know, obviously a lot of the times we're our own obstacle at the end of the day, but do you feel like most people have the power and the will power to make these changes in their life to make it better. Yeah, I don't feel like it or thinking I know it, I know and I've watched it firsthand in my life, my dad, my 1st 10 years of my life? Well, 15 years of my life really was a drug addict and alcoholic didn't live the way he'd be proud of living. And then I watched him make one decision. One change in his life. That's why my books called The Power of One More. I believe you are much closer to the life you want than you think you are. But because you believe you're so far away, you perpetually act in accordance with that belief system and you keep it there. But what if that's one of the great lives of life that we're so far away from our dreams, our our vision, What if you're one decision away? One relationship, one meeting, one interview, one book, one new thought, one new emotion away. And I know that to be true, my life is a product of a series of one more's and everybody can change their life. And that's the I'm so glad you asked that that's the overall message of my work and this show is you can change your life and there's a way to do it. Yeah. And by the way, I completely subscribe to the one sort of theory as well. One sort of thing. One idea, one moment obviously changes everything and it all starts up here. Where do you go? And by the way, this is a question I asked my therapist all the time. Where do you go when you start to peel back the layers of people's issues? How do you sort of start that process? Well, I start the process by actually first asking them where they want to be. And I think if you know where you want to go, it's almost like a road map in your life. It's very difficult to give somebody directions if they don't know where they're going and it's okay to be stuck in the mud right now, we can focus on that all day. But once we know where we're going now, we can reverse engineer a plan. And the truth is uncovering pain. Uncovering hurt, confusion is a very liberating process that creates freedom, as you know, from working with a therapist, Most of us are afraid to go there because we think we're gonna get locked into that space or by touch this pain, I'm gonna be stuck in it. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you start ripping the band aid off of the scab, that's when it begins to heal. And so there's courage it takes to do that. But the truth is immediately it's liberating. Immediately you're more free and immediately begin to heal. It's when we hide from it and it gets no light and no oxygen on it, that it can't heal. And so just starting to look at it takes courage, but it's the beginning of the healing process? And I got about a minute left with you, what sort of the best part of hosting this show from your perspective, What what do you sort of feel when you do this show? It's the follow up stories we've already been doing brother, It's the, it's seeing these families, their lives change. It's also knowing that when someone's watching this, although their challenge, your problem may be different, that they can find the answer.
