Just days after Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter is officially completed, the billionaire is quickly making sweeping changes to the social media platform.

All right. Meanwhile, our trend check looks a little bit different today that since one social media platform itself is likely on everybody's mind today and of course we're talking about twitter and what it could look like now that Elon musk's takeover has officially begun. So we have David Ewald editor in chief over at Gizmodo joining us this morning for his insight. David, Good morning. Thanks so much for joining us for starting off yesterday musk tweeted an unfounded anti L G B T Q conspiracy theory about the attack on paul, Pelosi. He later deleted it. I guess the large question there's the tweet right there can the person who now is enforcing twitter in its own content moderation policies on its new or on its new owner can't even enforce these new moderation policies? No, I think we're done with the conversation. No, he can't. There's a real fundamental problem here in that Ellen is first and foremost a twitter user. He bought this platform because he likes using it. He likes the echo chamber, he likes all the positive feedback he gets. Um I don't think anybody would say that Ellen bought this because it was a sound business decision, he bought it because he likes being able to tweet whatever he wants and getting response from the public and it certainly raises a real conflict of interest that if this guy is getting so much attention for tweeting whatever he wants. Is he the right person to stop the rest of the world from tweeting whatever they want, Probably not. And you bring up a good point about that because there is a growing concern about rampant hate speech on twitter and must says that he plans to have a content moderation council to address that. So do you think that we'll see maybe changes in the way twitter's terms or services and content moderation policies exist now? Well, it's complicated because on one hand, Ellen certainly has signaled yes, we're gonna change the way we do this, I want this to be a free speech platform first and foremost and so I'm sure that they're going to look at these changes and say hey maybe we should open up the doors again, bring back some people like donald trump who are banned. But the problem is that twitter is not just this is not the town square, this is not just where people can go to say whatever they want, this is a business and all the businesses that Ellen is going to want to make money from on twitter read, you know the advertisers, they don't want it to turn back into a free for all they want safety for their brands. No company wants to have one of their corporate sponsored tweets or one of their own tweets be next to some Nazi so are there going to be actual changes? I don't know, I would kind of be surprised if there are beyond maybe letting some of those banned people back. I don't think they're gonna change the terms of service that much because then they're gonna lose all their advertisers, Kanye West, his twitter account was reinstated just a few days ago and there's been a lot of speculation as you mentioned that trump potentially could return to twitter Elon musk has said that he would reinstate it. Is that decision something that must can make unilaterally here, he owns the company so yeah, he can make these decisions unilaterally now, it's not the best way to make this kind of decision in any corporate environment but I think he absolutely can and showing that he is the type of guy who just might be alright, let donald back on, we want to have this conversation again or I want to win some favors from Django put them back on the platform so it wouldn't surprise me at all if that sort of decision was just made unilaterally earlier, you mentioned advertisers we know that General Motors announced that they are pausing spending on twitter ads. So how are some of the other advertisers responding so far to the change in ownership? I think there's a lot of weight and see right now, I mean as you were saying earlier, one of the things that's already happened in the past couple of days just since the deal was finalized is there's been a huge explosion in anti Semitic tweets and racist tweets even though the terms of service hasn't changed a lot of the user base is trying things out like can we get away with this stuff now? And I think advertisers are very nervous about that. They haven't pulled their money yet, but they're also not making any new buys. They're probably gonna wait a little while just to see, okay, is this gonna turn to the hellscape that some of us are worried that it's going to be or is it gonna be kind of the same thing? So it's we're we're a holding pattern right now. Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see what twitter looks like over the next little while.
