Emmy Nominations 2022: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises

but not the Grammys, Let's Talk the Emmys. The nomination for the 2022 Emmy Awards have now been revealed in HBO's succession and Apple Tv plus is Ted Lasso once again dominating succession. The most nominated program of the year. It got 25 nods including outstanding Drama as well as outstanding lead actor nominations for brian cox and jeremy Strong. How about Ted Lasso? That was recognized with 20 nominations while the limited series. Yes, the White Lotus. Remember that show that earned 20 as well? The HBO series starring Sydney, Sweeney and Alexandra Dario received an incredible eight nominations in supporting acting categories. The dropout Inventing ANna and pam and Tommy also nominated in the limited series category as well. It really seems white lotus came out forever. You know, it really felt like it started at the beginning of the still had the music hacks and only murders in the building, earning 17 times each euphoria, Yellowjackets, squid, game and Severance all nominated for best drama series. The south korean survival drama secured 14 nominations and made history by becoming the first ever non english language show and series solely produced outside of a western country to receive a major category nomination. Nearly 20% of this year's nominated actors of color hail from three shows squid game fun fact that means the 74th Emmys is the most korean ever half of this year's Emmy nominated actors of color came from those three shows like I mentioned squid Game Abbott Elementary and Ted Lasso. The most diverse category this year is the comedy supporting actor. Absolutely has some other notable nominees and some record breaking moments includes India and the youngest acting nominee for the second year in a row and also former President Barack Obama earned his very first Emmy nomination for narrating our great national Parks. And how about SNL continuing its record shattering number of nominations. 315 now since 1975 insane to sort of think about also first time nominations for jennifer Coolidge as well in the you know, if she wins, could you imagine what sort of acceptance she would give? I would literally just combust if that happened. But white lotus by the way in that acting category for the actress. Five of the seven in that category for best actress in a limited series. All from White Lotus, one of those being Sydney Sweeney who got two nominations also for euphoria as well. I've always said from the very beginning that I think Sydney Sweeney is gonna be a household name and she's becoming that I think she's a complete star. Can we talk about my favorite show, succession, well deserved most nominations there squid Game We All You and I talked about that show a lot on this on this on this show. We absolutely love it and I love that it's a foreign show, making waves in this country and Abbott Elementary first time nominee this year, one of the big networks. I really do like that. So it's really cute. It gives me office vibes The whole there's like a jim pam story line, all that kind of stuff. It's really cute. But we don't see a lot of network television getting a lot of nominations. And Abbot Elementary sort of paving the way there. I think that says so much about Abbot Elementary and the quality of that show. And here to talk more about the name's is brian Heldman, Senior tv Editor at People Brianne. Good to have you here. So as Hannah just mentioned succession leading them away 25 nominations, What does this mean for HBO? Which by the way, led all nominations. Outpacing netflix again, incredible. I mean HBO just keeps bringing it, they've been doing it since Game of Thrones since sopranos. It really has become such a jog or not. You know, every year at the Emmys that HBO is going to dominate and succession 25 nominations, 14 of them in acting categories. Which is unheard of. That's actually a record. We have outrageous. Yeah, we have to talk about this is us because a lot of people are outraged over that 35 Emmy nominations during its six seasons. Did you expect it to get it done? I don't think it got it got one got one and a lot of people saying mandy moore got snubbed. The writers. Got snubbed. What are your thoughts here? I am actually outraged by this. I think some of its nominations over the years. Maybe not quite as deserved but this final season was as good as the first season and everyone was talking about it. It was hugely buzzy and so tremendous and mandy moore's performance was epic. It is absolutely a snub that she did not get this nomination. And the funny thing is that the one nomination is for music and lyrics which her husband nomination, she did not know that. It was also kind of interesting because the Emmys tend to like to give send offs to actors into shows usually in their last season. Clearly not the case here with this is us the case for Blackish. Blackish also only got two technical nominations. No nomination for Tracy. Ellis ross nomination for Anthony Anderson, it's like that comedy category. They only had room for one network comedy and they made it Abbott Elementary but there should be room for both, agree, you know, you bring up such a good point and then the other sort of other big snub here, maybe Selena Gomez for only murders in the building given the fact that her co stars, both of both of them getting nominations here. Any other big surprises to you here? Yeah, I mean I was really surprised to see we crashed not get any nominations. I mean the opportunity to nominate, Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway, Anne Hathaway was fantastic in that whether you like the series or not and even gas lit. I mean people didn't love that series but the opportunity to nominate Julia roberts seemed kind of surprising to not see her on the list. But I totally agree with you about Selena Gomez as as do steven marty who have put out a statement saying that they couldn't do this show without her, she's absolutely necessary and they seem quite disappointed by her lack of nomination. And even made I think most forgot about maybe make the limited series category, didn't even get in there and the acting in that show was incredible. Yeah, Margaret Quali got the nomination but her mom andie Macdowell did not and Andie Macdowell got the nomination all of the award shows leading up to this one. So it is big surprise there as well. And like baker mentioned HBO outpaced netflix for Emmy nominations. We know netflix is kind of reorganizing the rethinking their strategy with more content, less content, more quality. Do you think it's an end of an era for netflix. Oh, I think we're a little bit we're a little far away from the end of an era for netflix. I think we're actually really at the beginning of an era for Hulu because you really stepped up with the nomination and they really stepped up with the content. I mean, dope Sick is probably one of the best things I've seen in the last year. It's so remarkable and they had picked up uh 14 nominations and I think it will probably take the limited series category. We're also seeing them, you know, they did the girl from Plainville, they did Pam and Tommy which also picked up a surprising 10 nomination. I didn't expect that one to get so much left. I really loved it. I'm here for it but I was not expecting it. And tell me, by the way, no disrespect, it was really great. Really. James was amazing as Pamela Anderson, but I don't think anybody had it on their enemy radar whatsoever. But you're right about 58 nominations and hulu that is a record for that platform. But as henna mentioned earlier, Brianne, not a lot of diversity when it came to, you know, the nominees, they basically only came from three shows, Abbot Elementary squid Game in ted Lasso, what's your sort of take on that? I think I think it's really disappointing. Look it's great to see more asian nominees. That that's a huge record for the Academy. But it is disappointing to see such a lack of diversity across, especially the the acting categories. It would have been great to see Blackish gets on nominations. There have been some amazing shows 61st Street on A. M. C. That could have really gotten in there. And it's disappointing not to see see them show up. And I have to ask you do you think these award shows and winning an Emmy is as important as it used to be. Is it still as relevant? The short answer is no it's not. People are gonna watch what they're gonna watch, they're gonna watch what their friends are talking about, They're going to watch the show that I call their flannel pajamas. Look at the end of the day, so many people are still watching all of these procedurals on network television, the Chicago, the Law and Order The NCIS is and I call those flannel pajamas because you just know what you're going to get their comfortable to watch and those aren't getting nominations. Grey's Anatomy is still one of the biggest shows on television. Not getting nominations. Doesn't matter, it's super, does not matter. But it does build some buzz. It certainly helps elevate some of these actors. You mentioned Sydney Sweeney earlier, huge deal for her to be getting her to to first nominations and it does bring her into that household name status that you were talking about. So there's value for sure, and it does create create more, People can see it more than, you know, shows like Abbott Elementary, that maybe people haven't checked out. They're like, oh this show is legit, it's getting all these Emmy nominations and they're gonna go on to the streaming platforms and catch up before season two, by the way, bree. And I mean I'm glad you mentioned the flannel pajamas because it was interesting because there's a tweet that said yesterday, that was really funny, but so I propelled for this because we had the nominations happening as Prime Day is happening basically at the same time. Do you feel like this was almost so overwhelming. People were like, oh my God, I don't know what to do. Do I buy a weight lotus? What do I do in this situation? I was losing my mind. I was like, what are we gonna cover with the M. E? What are the big trends? Oh my gosh, there's this electric toothbrush I've been wanting. I really want, I love that you brought that up.
