Expert Elevator Pitch Tips From 'Shark Tank' Star Daymond John

just this past weekend, I caught up with shark tank host and the curator of black entrepreneurs week Damon john to talk all about business and I walked away with a few awesome tips, take a look. So Daymond john 30 year anniversary of you and now we're having this amazing black entrepreneurs day here at the Apollo theater, but 30 years ago you were outside selling your shirts and clothing outside of the back of a car, How was this full circle moment for you? Yeah, I'm ready to go sell right now, I'm always selling, I mean, you know, you know, words really can't express it right? Because you know, when you, when you come up with a vision and like we will see so many entrepreneurs on that stage who are just coming up with a vision that that that day how they can just really bring joy to one person and then the next day another person and another person you don't think about this, right? But now, as I reflect back on it and I see all these amazing entrepreneurs on the stage and the fact that right, I did stand out front of here and now I can stand on the stage with so many other people. It's absolutely amazing because a lot of times you don't even get to that point right, A lot of business owners start and you know, they have to close the businesses. So it's really an amazing time, what is the one reason you think a lot of businesses fail when they're trying to start out because it's hard, It's really hard, right? You don't know what you don't know. And usually a business owner doesn't stay because they're like, I want to make money. Not a real entrepreneur. There there are people that go to finance school or they find other ways a business owner really starts because they're like, either there's a problem, they thought somebody was gonna fix and nobody didn't, they say I'm gonna fix it or they get so much joy out of sharing their food with you, me dressing you and things of that nature. They don't know how to manufacture and now do warehousing, social media conversion, advertising accountants, staffing. HR I mean I just want to make some cupcakes, right? So, so that's what happens, right? And so that's why we are doing things like this to give them the understanding of logistics, finance, manufacturing and access to this information. You know, a lot of other cultures may have had a mother or grandfather, somebody else, a generation who was able to say, here's the mistakes I made, son or daughter. Here's how you can avoid those. We have a lower, not, not totally lost, but we have a lower amount of resources like that. Historically in our family because of various different different issues that we're not here to talk about. So we want to give people that uh that availability of this information and really honestly everybody needs this information. It doesn't matter what color you are and a lot of people need to know how to pitch to you guys have in their people pitching for business. You have people pitching you on shark tank. So if someone is going to get in the elevator with someone who has some money have to deliver an elevator pitch, what advice do you give to them to successfully, be able to deliver it, Find a way to resonate with them. People love to live into a story and uh find a way to not put pressure on them. I love a young lady pitched me one day and she said, I love who you are. I know some of the stuff you do. I never thought I would meet you. I'm gonna think about more than I guess what I'm gonna buy you $20,000 worth of my time. So do me a favor. If you just tell me who to contact your company, I won't bother you and if you like my stuff that it's $20,000 worth of my time. If you don't, no harm, no foul done. I was like, man, where you gonna find her again? Right? So, but you're not only pitching when you're trying to in your in the elevator, you're trying to get into the bathroom before your husband or wife, you're telling your child, please just shut up and get on the school bus and taking chuck e cheese in the morning and on the weekend, right? So you're always pitching. So the ability the ability to be able to articulate this in a way that's in for the person you're talking to is life changing. Okay, So I have this business idea, I wanna pitch you right now. Here's the problem, right? You thought of what you have, you want to you already? Right, Right, right. Talk about how you can help them. You would have been doing amazing things and I think I can add value to those amazing things you're doing. See, we already we already learned something, no matter what you're gonna learn when you walk in there. Okay, We want people to watch this on thursday.
