FDA Considers First Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill

The Food and Drug administration is considering letting you get birth control pills without a prescription. Members of the FDA are scheduled to meet next week to review an application by the drug maker Perrigo and this company wants to sell an over the counter pill. If it's approved, it will be the first contraceptive pill to go from behind the counter to store shelves. It will also significantly decrease the cost of getting this type of drug which normally requires a doctor's visit. One of the reasons birth control has historically been a prescription only medication is that some people have an adverse side effect to this type of drug.
