Federal Abortion Ban Lifted in Mexico

Mexico's Supreme Court ruled to decriminalize abortion. Yesterday, the High court threw out all federal criminal penalties for abortion. This means abortion will be available at federal public health institutions throughout the country in handing down its decision. The Supreme Court said, quote, the legal system that penalizes abortion in the federal criminal code is unconstitutional since it violates the human rights of women and people with the capacity to just state. Abortion still remains a crime. In 20 of Mexico's states judges in those states will need to take further legal steps to remove all penalties currently in place.
