Glow Recipe has exploded in popularity since its appearance on Shark Tank, thanks in part to its presence on social media. Sarah Lee and Christine Chang, co-founders and co-CEOs of Glow Recipe, joined Cheddar News to discuss the growth of their brand, what makes it different from other skincare brands, and where they hope to take the company next.

Glow Recipe Founders on Creating a K-Beauty Inspired Brand

Here to tell us all about it is sara lee and Christine chang their co founders and co ceos of glow recipe. So Sarah, let's start with you. What defines the glow recipe brand and its products? Yeah, thank you for having us. Our brand is all about being clinically effective while being fruit forward for glowing skin Christine and I co founded this brand a few years ago when we saw the white space where we wanted to co found a brand that combines clinically effective ingredients with fruit forward ingredients as well. So, Christine over to you, You guys are co founders with Sarah. Um what inspired you to start a skin care company and how do you stand out from the countless other beauty brands especially because you know K Beauty, A lot of people try to replicate that, especially with american brands. Absolutely! So Sarah and I both grew up with you know, learning skincare from our mothers and grandmothers where skincare was this amazing sense, a real experience and we wanted to bring that joy to everyone's skin care routine. So glow recipe not only has clinically effective products, but also sensory textures and you're really able to just carve out that moment for yourself each day. And I think the fact that we're able to balance it both makes us really unique. Now. Sarah Glow recipe has exploded in popularity after your appearance on shark tank in 2015. So what do you attribute to your success? And are you surprised at how fast the brand has grown? Yeah, Christine and I still pinch ourselves every single day. It's truly a dream come true to have grown this much and also to be able to have a team of 47 people today. So since being appeared on shark tank in 2015, we're able to grow our business our own namesake brand, crispy skin care $250 million in global retail sales with less than 20 products in our assortment and our best seller, which is the watermelon glow nice in my dewdrops sold out so far 17 times. It's a number one serum at Sephora. It's a top seller across all of the global retailers as well. Our recent launch that you're seeing on the screen, which is our clinically effective eye cream called the guava. Bright eye vitamin C. Eye cream has just ranked a top eye cream in the ring as well and Christine. You know, one thing I love about your products is they're clean they're vegan and cruelty free free, so why was that so important to you and how rare is it that beauty products are truly all three of these things? So we are ingredients obsessed and that's been the case ever since our days at Loreal where Sarah and I worked together um doing marketing and product development and we wanted to really make sure we were choosing incredibly effective, clinically active ingredients in combination with fruit antioxidants all while making these formulas clean. It's something that I think a lot of customers are looking for in the beauty industry is definitely going in that direction. But I think where we continue to want to do better, it's just being as transparent as possible with our community about what exactly is in our formulas and how it's going to benefit them Now. Sarah glow recipe products are often inspired by korean beauty trends or K beauty. So can you tell us a little bit more about how that inspired your brand? Yeah, Christine and I were born and raised in Korea. We came to the States, We wanted to create something that's inspired by our upbringing and our heritage and part of that is actually our skin care philosophy. We always make sure that we're taking a holistic approach to skin, where we're thinking about how our skin feels each and every day because your skin is different every single day. So we educate our community to make sure that they understand what their skin is going through and making sure that they're selecting the best ingredients that suits their skin needs every single day. As opposed to being a formulaic approach. We were trained that your skin can be one of maybe four different types. It could be dry, oily said Or combo, but actually throughout 365 days in a year, your skin can really vary and go through different cycles depending on the seasonality your lifestyle. So we have five different serums and a portfolio that can really address all of your skin concerns and Christine what's next for glow recipe. So, absolutely a lot of product innovation coming down the pipe, including our most recent launch, the guava eye serum. Um in addition to that, we really want to continue to stay true to our core values that are important to us from day one, whether it be our pledge to never use words like poor list or perfection or flawless words that we feel like don't set up real estate acceptance and continuing to go deeper and sustainability. We just achieve carbon neutrality this year and it's important for us to think about our overarching sustainability journey, whether it comes to conscious ingredients, sustainable sourcing, better packaging and our monitor product pledges to Environmental Preservation organization.
