Hasan Minhaj Talks 'The King's Jester' And Future of Comedy

I know everybody likes Starbucks but I hate the fact that they have a drink called chai tea chai is tea. You want some naan bread. Welcome back to trending the hilarious Hassan Minaj is returning to netflix with this new stand up special, The king's gesture, it's a follow up to his award winning special homecoming king and in the king's jester Minaj shares everything on his thoughts on fertility fatherhood and freedom of speech. And our west Coast correspondent Celestino sat down with the comedian to talk all about his new netflix special. Take a look at this. You open up talking about fertility, your fertility journey. Why did you feel like that was necessary to be included in this special? I think to me great comedy involves some level of confession and vulnerability. You got to put yourself out there before you criticize your critique others. Um and and when I was writing the show my director was telling me passion Venkataraman john was he goes, hey you should, you need to bleed on the page. Tell me share something with me that you're too embarrassed to talk about, that you feel kind of humiliated by or that you feel like it feels like a secret. That's probably the beginning of like a really great idea or story. And so the fertility story, the Saudi embassy story time 100 story, all these things were secrets that I hadn't really talked about um and they became the beginning of really breaking out a deeply personal storytelling show. So yeah and and by the way, I think it's probably best that I make fun of myself before I make fun of others. So that's, that seems fair. Yeah. And there's a lot of heart in this. So that makes sense. You also talk about balancing fame with your family, which I think is like one of the most hilarious bits of this special and I'm wondering now that your dad, you have two kids, what has changed in terms of your priorities? Have they shifted? Yeah. I think one of the things that has changed between even my first special and now is, you know, when I was coming up, I first started doing comedy when I was 18 and I got married when I was 30 those 1st 12 years of my career in my life, it really was just about me like, man, I gotta make it man, I got to get health insurance man, I gotta be able to pay the bills. It really was just about myself. Now when I'm on stage I realized I really represent my wife Dina are two Children. There are other people that count on me and I'm also at that age now where When you're growing up, you're gaining things, you're gaining new experiences. You're gaining new friends. I'm now at this point in my life, I'm 37, I'm starting to see my friends and I'm losing things. People are losing loved ones, people are losing their hair, people are losing their weight. All these things you're actually losing these and you have to come to terms with, Hey, what actually matters and I need to protect and save that. I mean you're gaining so much though when we talk about the growth from homecoming King to now, you've achieved so much externally and talking not only just about your family, but like awards selling out shows, the netflix specials. What do your goals look like these days? For me, it's about doing the, the, it's chasing the feeling of, I've never seen that on film or on screen or on the stage before. That's always what I'm chasing of this burning feeling to put something out there into the world that hasn't been done before. That's really what I'm chasing. So right now we're in pre production on a film. I haven't seen a movie like that and that's what's carrying me through pre production and I want to spend the rest of my life learning and sharing those stories that and that to me would be like a fulfilled, amazing life. So excited for that. Just about 30 seconds left here, I have to ask you talk a lot about the line when it comes to your own personal line with your family. What do you think the future of comedy looks like right now? Yeah, I think right now there's a conversation about freedom of speech and it's being conflated with what acceptable speeches and people are mixing up the two. Oh you're inhibiting my freedom of speech You're allowed to say anything. I think in society right now we are determining what is the social decorum of what you're allowed to say on twitter, on a facebook wall on a forum for your Children's school, What you should say on linkedin, what you should say in the D. M. S. We are figuring out acceptable speech in digital decorum and I think I'm a big believer in humanity. I think we will figure it out and I think we will figure out a way and and a path forward because we have to we must
