Many city dwellers deal with tiny living space. For some inspiration and a peek into 2022's biggest decor trends, Apartment Therapy created 12 120-square foot exhibits for its Small/Cool NYC pop-up. Cheddar News caught with Apartment Therapy founder and CEO Maxwell Ryan to learn more and get some styling tips when you don't have much room.

How To Decorate a Small Living Space

Welcome back to Cheddars. Opening Bell. If you're living in a city, chances are you're dealing with a small space. The average apartment size in New York for example is just 820 square feet according to axiom metrics. So how do you style a small space? A new exhibit called apartment therapy? Small slash Cool. NyC has some tips and cheddar news is Michelle Castelluccio is there to show you what you need to do. Michelle take it away. Thanks so much Asia, I'm here with Maxwell Ryan, he's the Ceo and founder of apartment therapy. So Maxwell, thank you so much for having us today. Can you tell me a little bit more about this 12 room exhibit? Alright, so this are small, cool exhibit is 12 rooms by 12 designers trying to nail 12 trends for 2022 and the goal is to inspire people so that they can make any small room not just beautiful, but also feel roomy and useful and big. So each room is 100 and 20 square feet. Do you have any tips on how to make a small space work for you? We have every room has tips. This one room by Jenna Pelant is using paint which is provided by bear to make the room feel bigger. The vertical stripes up the wall. It seems a little bit out there but it works, it makes the walls feel taller and it will make this smaller space feel bigger. Now this is a very big rarity here in new york city to have a tight end table, but let's move over to a room that I think a lot of people might feel a little bit more familiar with good and this room right here is the living room slash office slash everything room and I think everyone knows this room in New york, How do you make the small space work for you? Right, so totally different room. This is by Christiane Lemieux and a couple of things are happening here. One is, you'll notice she's not actually using small furniture sometimes in a small space using some larger pieces, but fewer pieces will give the room a feeling of luxury and generous nous and it can actually make the room feel bigger than it is. You can't put too much too many pieces, but that's what's happening here. In addition, she's also doing the vertical thing. She insisted that these curtains went right to the ceiling, we had them a little bit lower, she said no, no raise them. The whole point of this room is to make them taller and more vertical to make the ceiling feel farther away and make the room again, more luxurious, feel bigger and I love the dual purpose furniture, this whole platform, which is also your end table. I know this is really uncommon and a lot of people commented on this, it was interesting because you don't quite notice it right away, but this is a sofa with a side table in one and it works, you know, you get you get double duty out of this piece, you know, and is there anything else that you have? You know, we start to see that apartments are getting a lot bigger in the pandemic, ironically, but why are we still dealing with small spaces? I think we're always dealing with smaller spaces in the sense that they're smaller than we want them to be. But one thing I'm hearing a lot, even with the people who work for us, we're working from home and living at home and I'll now raising kids at home. So instead of being at home, half the time they were there 24 hours. So we're putting a lot more pressure on the space, making it feel smaller. Well, we're gonna have to leave it there today.
