1. HURRICANE IAN LATEST

Hurricane Ian barreled across Florida, causing widespread flooding from torrential rain and significant storm surges, and leaving more than 2.4 million customers without power. Downgraded to a tropical storm, still-dangerous Ian is expected to threaten Georgia and the Carolinas next. We knew it was going to be bad based on the Waffle House Index; the restaurant chain barely ever closes, so it's a big deal when 21 locations shut their doors for the storm. Disney World will also be closed at least through today.

2. GOOD & PLENTIFUL FOOD

Good food and plenty of it, says the Biden administration. The president wants to end hunger in the U.S. by the end of the decade and announced more than $8 billion in commitments from companies’ charitable foundations and other industry groups to make that happen. Meanwhile, the FDA announced new rules for food labels that will require products labeled "healthy" to meet new standards. In 2021, 10% of U.S. households were worried about food insecurity.

3. RAPPER COOLIO DEAD AT 59

Coolio, the rapper who scored hits like “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” has died. He was among hip-hop's biggest names of the 1990s. He was 59.

4. ALZHEIMER'S DRUG HOPE

Pharmaceutical companies Biogen and Eisai have announced promising results from a drug to treat Alzheimer's disease. Late-stage testing of the IV medication called lecanemab reportedly showed signs that it slows cognitive decline in patients. This comes after Biogen's less successful rollout of the drug Aduhelm, which narrowly won regulatory approval last year, but wasn't very effective and had more severe side effects (the new drug was still linked to brain swelling and bleeding in some patients). Eisai has filed for accelerated approval; an FDA decision could come early next year.
Let us hope this provides real relief to Alzheimer's patients — and their families.

5. GOOD DAY FOR MARKETS

Investors are hoping for another good day on Wall Street after the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 all closed up about 2% Wednesday. It's a breath of fresh air after the economy has taken hit after hit for weeks now. However, things are not so rosy in the U.K. The Bank of England announced it will buy government bonds to shore up the economy; the country's currency tanked after the new prime minister announced an aggressive tax-cut plan.

6. TWITTER V. MUSK HEATS UP

Twitter and Elon Musk are going head-to-head in pre-trial motions, as both sides gear up for a five-day court case in Delaware. Musk announced he was pulling his $44 billion deal to purchase the social media company in July — and Twitter promptly sued him in August to force the world’s richest man to close the deal. As they argue over who has the more accurate data on the real number of Twitter users, it’s sure to be an intense and heated battle.
This should be more fun than a Tweety & Sylvester cartoon!

7. EXTREME SKIER'S BODY FOUND

Rescuers have recovered the body of Hilaree Nelson, an extreme skier from Colorado, who had climbed Mount Manaslu just two days earlier. She reportedly fell or was swept off the Nepal mountain, one of the highest in the world, as she was skiing back down with her partner Jim Morrison.

8. R. KELLY MUST PAY

Disgraced singer R. Kelly has been ordered to pay more than $300,000 in restitution to victims of his sex trafficking. Earlier this year, a federal judge found Kelly guilty of racketeering and other charges and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. The fee is likely to increase after prosecutors recalculate costs of herpes medication, which the victims contracted from the singer.

9. COURIC'S BREAST CANCER

Veteran news anchor Katie Couric revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer over the summer. Fortunately, the 65-year-old began treatment immediately and just wrapped up her final radiation course. Now, she wants other women to be serious about their breast health. Couric said she delayed her annual mammogram by six months and feared what the diagnosis might have been if she held it off even longer.

10. IN ENTERTAINMENT

Here are some of the entertainment headlines we've been watching for the last 24 hours: The Mahershala Ali-led Blade, which was set to begin production in November, lost its director. Tom Hanks said he has made only four good films in his 45-year career, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show is hitting the road.

11. CALIFORNIA GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

Flag football is gaining steam in the U.S. First the NFL decided to change the format of its Pro Bowl game to non-tackling flag football. Now California is considering making it an official sport for girls. Currently, the state allows girls to play tackle football on high school teams, but that rarely happens. Meanwhile, girls flag football is already a high school sport in Alabama and Nevada with at least 11,000 active players.
