Illinois has just become the first state to mandate Asian American history in its public schools. Under the new legislation signed by Gov.J.B. Pritzker, the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History Act will now require schools to implement a new curriculum whereby students will now be taught about Asian American communities and their contributions to the U.S. The topics will essentially focus on Asian communities in Illinois and the Midwest. This comes as a result of a number of Anti-Asian attacks in the midst of the pandemic. Executive director at Asian Americans Advancing Justice Grace Pai, joined Cheddar to discuss more.
