Illinois Supreme Court Bans Semi-Automatic Weapons

Today, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the ban on the sale and possession of semi automatic weapons in the state. The law bans dozens of rifles and handguns including the Ar 15 rifle which has been among the most popular rifles sold in the US. The Protect Our Communities Act was proposed after the July 4th 2022 shooting in Chicago in the Highland Park area where a shooter killed seven people and injured dozens of others. The ban does exempt law enforcement officers and military personnel.
