In Entertainment: Black Panther Still Dominates, Jon Batiste & J.Lo New Music

it's time for your weekend box office update And this weekend audiences suited up again for Black Panther Wakanda forever. Disney's Black Panther sequel brought in a roaring 46 million in its third week, which is pretty impressive. Meanwhile, the number two spot, Disney's newest animated adventure, Strange World. It's kind of a flop now, bringing in only 12 million in its opening weekend and debuting, this is the big news here. Chloe number three Netflix's glass onion, a knives out mystery. It brought in nine million dollars. And this is important because netflix is now sort of testing out this strategy of how long they can maybe put one of their films in theaters for a week, maybe a little bit longer to sort of test out how much money potentially they've been leaving out out there for so long. I mean $9 million. It's just money that they've been like leaving out on the table for years. It's nothing to sneeze at. Certainly, I also want to call attention to Disney kind of having the top and one of the 12,000,001 of the flops as well. Speaking of, you know, bob iger taking back over over, there was some discussion that one of the reasons that Strange World did flop was because not enough attention was paid to sort of publicizing it. The fact that so many of these movies have gone direct to streaming. So there are obviously going to be some reorganization happening there with some more, what they say is going to be creative control handed back over the team. So I'm really interested to see where this goes, what it means. Yeah, especially given the fact that Disney had been putting a lot of Pixar movies and a lot of other animated films only on Disney plus Disney in the days it was always a case by case basis of what was going to get released in theaters and what was going to go direct to streaming and you're right, it is much more of the creative type has much deeper relationships with the creative forces at Disney. How much is the theatrical strategy sort of changed now that bob iger's back into town? Yeah, I guess we'll have to see. And Grammy award winning cd john Batiste has been chosen to perform at thursday's White House State Dinner. The dinner will highlight longstanding ties between the United States and France and honor french President Emmanuel Macron, spokesperson for First Lady Jill Biden says Batiste is an artist who transcends generations and his music inspires and brings people together. Batista's was most recently was bandleader and musical director on the late show with Stephen Colbert, the State Dinner is the first of the biden and registration and as part of a broader state visit to the United States by Macron. So interesting, I actually didn't know a whole lot about Jon Batiste before reading about this story, but you know, he comes from a long lineage of story musicians in new Orleans, the Batiste's family, he has over 25 musicians in his family, including one of his Lionel Batiste of the brass band which is incredibly famous in New Orleans. It plays that Prez Ovation Hall historic venue among others. So this is really interesting to me, especially since of course when you think about France and the U. S. You do think about some of that influence there in new Orleans as well. Nobody is having a hotter career at the moment than john Baptiste. I mean he is just on another planet right now. I was really surprised that it's taken this long for the administration to have their first state dinner which we should note. The first lady is always in charge of corroborating and getting this together. The biden administration is on track to have the, the lowest amount of these state dinners than any other presidency out. Their former president trump only had two, which is interesting. His was really low. So I looked this up. The Clintons had 29 state dinners 12 in their first term, The bushes, 13 4 in their first term. But even crazier than that the Obama's had 13 6 in just the first year six in the first year. So that's insane to think about. That is crazy. All right. Meanwhile, jennifer in the block is back with some new music for us jail releasing her first new album in eight years. It's called This is me now and it's focusing on the journey that the singer has made over the last 20 years. The friday announcement came on the 20th anniversary of Lopez's 2000 to record. This Is Me Then now, This featured that's that album by the way, featured songs like jenny from the Block and a song for her then Fiance Ben Affleck called Dear Ben. Well the new album has two new songs called Dear Band Part Two and also a new one called Midnight Trip to Vegas. That's a nod to her Vegas wedding that she had Just recently, J Lo also appearing on the Zane Lowe show on Apple Music tonight to talk about the album, J Lo hasn't announced a release date but maybe she's waiting for Tonight to do so. Which major shoutout to wheeler producer who wrote that. That's a really good one. She, by the way, a lot of people had an anticipation that something was coming from J Lo because last week she purged and deleted everything off of her instagram account. So it's always So the first foretelling that something is around the corner in terms of an announcement. Yeah, baker, absolutely. I know we're supposed to be talking about this new album, but when Waiting for Tonight was written in there, I immediately started Googling that on the sixth album. That was my personal favorite came out in 1999 sold over three million copies and two of those songs made it into the top you know, the Hot 100 If you had My Love, Another killer, you also have to think Dear Ben part two is probably going to be better than the first one I hope and Nicole Kidman may have just spent the most amount of money ever for a hat over the weekend. The Academy Award winner headed to broadway to see her friend Hugh Jackman in his role in the music man and gave everyone quite a surprise after the show. The production held an auction to benefit broadway cares slash fights AIDS and this is when Kidman did something remarkable, she bid $100,000 for a hat signed by her pal Hugh. Jackman. Kidman took the mic to say, quote, I love you, I love broadway and I love what they do or broadway cares, but I also want to say the show is extraordinary end quote, such an incredible story here. I think that's just, I mean, broadway cares is such an incredible organization, just like raising money to ensure widespread opportunity for people in the entertainment industry, but also more broadly to receive access to health care for HIV and AIDS and other things as well. Yeah, they do this at the end of every broadway show and you know, it's always good when you sort of see these donations, but apparently nobody knew Nicole Kidman was in the audience. We should also know J Lo and Ben Affleck also at that same performance the other day, which is crazy and apparently the person sitting next to Nicole Kidman, she kept telling them a bit higher so that way she could bid above them. So could you imagine if you're sitting next to Nicole Kidman? She's like hi will you bid $10,000. Hi could you bid 20,000? I'd be like excuse me, my credit card. It does not go that I need, I need some insurance here. But apparently her and Hugh Jackman are long time friends for over 30 years. And Hugh Jackman, who was so stunned by this, had said that he wanted to clarify that this was in US dollars, not Australian dollars, but either way still amazing that she still did this very heartwarming story.
