In Entertainment: 'Dragon Ball' Wins Box Office & 'House of the Dragon' Crashes HBO Max

let's kick things off with a check of the box office and it means 13th yes, 13th weekend paramount pictures, Top Gun Maverick flew past the $1.4 billion mark. The tom Cruise film has now brought in $720 million overseas and 683.4 million domestically. That now means it has now surpassed Avengers infinity war as the sixth highest grossing film in U. S. History. Another marvel film, 2018 black panther that sits at number five with just over 700 million so area with the lack of new titles hitting theaters. Over the next couple of weeks, Maverick has a very good chance to become one of the five highest grossing movies in north american history. And this weekend audiences also got supercharged for crunchy Rules. Dragon Ball, super superhero. The enemy action film brought in 20 million in its opening weekend. It was the company's largest release to date, hitting 3130 theaters. The first place finish is even more impressive when you consider that the film opted against any sort of traditional advertising campaign, including tv tv commercials. In second place was Universal's Beast. The Elbe thriller hunted down $11.5 million in its opening weekend in the number three spot was Sony's bullet Train which made about eight million in its third week, definitely shocked by the dragon or ride the Super Bowl right there because of the fact that they didn't use any advertisements meaning that they just had a large amount of and they followers who are just really hyped to see this film. I'm glad you mentioned that area because according to comscore they actually broke down the marketing on this. People who bought tickets to see this film, 10% of them saw ads on television, close to 70% of them saw an ad for it on either Youtube or instagram. So that shows the power of how their marketing is really doing really well here. Whereas it's completely the opposite for Beast, by the way, ticket buyers for Beast, almost 40 Percent of them bought a ticket after seeing the trailer in theatre. So it's completely totally different audiences here. Meanwhile, on the topic of top gun maverick here for just one moment, as I mentioned, it is so close to cracking the top five. It only is about $20 million Black Panther, which would then get it into the top five domestically, which is really sort of incredible given the fact for almost 30 years aerial this movie was never going to get made. That is so shocking. I think it's just crazy how competitive that space is getting, especially in the movie world, especially post pandemic. You know, there's so much we have to keep up with. But of course you probably won't see this movie in theaters. I'm teasing a little movie here, but it's one of the most anticipated of the winter. Anyway, it's a follow up to Ryan johnson's hit murder mystery. You can guess what it is baker knives out is coming to netflix on december 23rd. The movie titled Glass Onion. A knives Out mystery will also be shown in select theaters. Netflix acquire the rights to the next two knives out films in a deal worth more than $400 million along with the at least date, the streaming giant shared first look, photos from the sequel, which looks pretty interesting, which stars Daniel Craig as detective Benoit blanc at the table. You also see Edward Norton, Jenelle Monet, Leslie Odom Jr you know him from Hambleton, Madelyn Cline and kate Hudson. But this time around blanc travels to Greece and becomes embroiled in a mystery alongside new characters. If you're expecting anything similar to knives out in the past. A little repeat. Well, don't expect that because according to netflix press releases, johnson wants this next film to look and feel as different as possible aside from the whole murder mystery thing. I love that because of the fact that if we go back to knives out, really enjoyed that film, it was great to see. Um but I don't know, I have this kind of gift to predict predicting the end of movie ever again with you. If that is the still, I can do it in five minutes. But um I predicted the end of this one. So I mean it was an excellent film but I kind of want them to kind of keep us guessing here. So I'm very curious about how this synopsis is going to be in Greece as we follow the same detective here. Look, this was a big purchase by netflix to get the rights to this because there's such an interest right now in these whodunit murder mysteries right now. And this is great because you can get all these a list celebrities, I mean you just listed the entire cast list and this is coming off the heels of the amazing cast that they had in the first one which did incredibly well in theaters. And it also showed that it doesn't have to be a big superhero blockbuster or something starring tom Cruise that generates a lot of revenue at the box office. So netflix thinks they've got a great franchise here that they can turn into multiple movies down the line. That's so true. And I have to lean into the idea of the big large cast because in the past, when you saw a large cast it was like, oh I don't know if this movie is gonna do so well, but you know, a knives out headed out of the park. So if they do this again with this other big name, a number of, of actors coming out, it's gonna be incredible like you said. And by the way, if you watched the first one, no spoilers, even though that movie came out forever ago. Daniel Craig's character said he had solved a lot of clues, so it looks like he is going to be doing this character for quite some sometime. Meanwhile, the Lord of the Rings headed back to the big screen, amazon's new series, The Lord of the Rings, the Rings of Power, going to screen their first two episodes in movie theaters across the world on august 31st and that's two days before it makes its streaming debut on amazon prime video. But guys, there is a catch for you, Lord of the Rings fans out there. You have to be a Cinemark. Movie rewards member to see it in theaters during that one night only event, amazon's unprecedented move all about engaging that franchises huge fan base and also cashing in on that investment. The upcoming series reportedly carries a production budget of more than $400 million in the first two episodes of the Rings of Power hitting amazon Prime video september the second by the way, reports out there, it's the most expensive per episode show. Also close to $30 million an episode to make this show, Amazon reportedly according to CNBC has swallowed more than a billion dollars just to prolong this for close to 10 years. They're hoping maybe five years they can get like five or five seasons out of this particular show. But the difference here between let's say a game of Thrones which we're gonna talk about here in a second and Lord of the Rings. This has an even bigger built in fan base that went to the movie theaters invested billions of dollars in this franchise and have been clamoring for a very very very long time to get this franchise back up. And as I mentioned with netflix with the knives out franchise, HBO with game of Thrones, everybody's in an I. P. Driven mode right now where they want franchises to invest in and you can't get a bigger one out there right now for amazon than Lord of the Rings. Like you said franchises are are hot and especially when you have such a loyal following. I mean if you hit it out of the park it can be gold. I mean you just mentioned a game of Thrones, we're gonna have to go into that. Our mountain martin wrote in one of his books that the only thing that could potentially tear down the House of dragon was itself and as you mentioned because of the the fact that people are so into these things they probably should have thought about because they should have included HBO max to with this there were more than 3700 reports of HBO max being down in the minutes after the Game of Thrones prequel premiered sunday night. This is according to down detector while millions of HBO max users were able to successfully view the new series somewhere. Not some users as you see right there tweeted about restarting and deleting but nothing was working. I would have freaked out. Yeah, so the streamer really didn't take the blame on this aerial HBO MAx released a statement saying, quote, we're aware of a small portion of users attempting to connect via fire tv devices that are having issues and are now in the process of resolving for those impacted users. By the way, this is the first time HBO has experienced streaming difficulties all connected to Game of Thrones and we're sure the company isn't too upset that the fan base is overwhelming, demand has definitely stuck around. I mean there There's so much anticipation for this show. People have been waiting because of how things ended in game of Thrones unsuccessfully for most people. I mean by the way, the last season of game of Thrones has a 55% rating on rotten tomatoes. This one seems to have gotten a lot of fans already excited, not a lot of them, according to Twitter are upset. It seems like and it looks like they've really started things off on a good note so far. I know both you and I have not seen it just yet. I'm watching it tonight but it looks like so far most of the fans are satisfied. I absolutely am going to watch it tonight and I think that's a good thing because I remember as a huge Game of Thrones fans, I finished this series was very disappointed and I was like I am not coming back again. The fact that they had so many fans returning and maybe even some new fans who are just starting with this series is absolutely in. Um, so, you know, high hopes baker, high hopes for this look and aerial. There's a lot of pressure on HBO MAx to get this right because if this fizzles out based on what happened on the last season, that is really bad news for HBO MAX, which wants a lot of game of Thrones spinoffs to come down the pipeline.
