In Entertainment: 'Maverick' Tops $1 Billion, Elvis No. 1 & McCartney at Glastonbury

But first let's get you caught up on some of the entertainment headlines we're following at this hour. Top Gun maverick flying into the billion dollar club at the global box office a first by the way for Tom Cruise. It's also the 50th Hollywood movie overall to hit the milestone. Others include Avatar, Avengers, Endgame and titanic director joseph Kosinski's film receiving a nice boost in its fifth weekend, finishing sunday with an estimated $521.7 million domestically, $484.7 million overseas. Top Gun two was only the second Hollywood title of the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion mark behind Spiderman. No way home. Now after a close race all weekend long, it now appears that Elvis will get to call itself the number one movie in America after it's friday debut, the king of rock and roll biopic pulled in $31.1 million. While Top Gun made $29.6 million. Tom Cruise arguably is probably one of the biggest stars in Hollywood global icon even I'm surprised he's just getting to the billion dollar mark. Of course I'm so happy for him. So many milestones though. Also the 50th movie and I think it's interesting that most of these movies that broke the billion dollar mark were marvel movies or comic book movies. Top Gun is one of those standalone films like titanic I suppose that is just doing so well, especially the fifth week. There have been so many movies that have come out this summer, Jurassic park. Elvis. I mean there's so many but top gun, it's holding onto his top spot. I happened to see it last weekend Asia. I have to say it's worth the hype. I saw it in the theater and I have a 12 year old who thinks he's too cool for everything he even liked and he brought his little friends like this movie is really, really good. Okay. My work, my homework is cut out for me because the last time you and I spoke we said we were gonna watch it. You actually did it. I have not yet. But even just looking at the numbers behind this, I mean it cost about $170 million dollars to make this movie and tens of millions of dollars to market it. And this was the bet that they were making is that the theatrical release was going to lead to offsetting those costs. And they were right. And when you compare it to Elvis for example, which really you can't except for this weekend with its premiere, you can see that the numbers there are really playing on their side as well because for the Elvis movie uh for comparison that costs about $85 million to make that movie and talking in its first weekend, 126.7 million in sales Elvis this weekend. Just clinching by with 30 million still a victory I think for Elvis. But when you think of it in that comparison, there's really no comparison. And I think it just gives us the idea that movie theaters are not actually dead. It's just people are willing to go out for certain genres or certain types of movie. And I think this is one of the movies that appeals to so many demographics. It's not just comic book fans, it's not just superheroes, not just comedy or horror. I think this is one of those movies that it is a family film. You can pretty much see it with anyone. Yeah, really exciting stuff. Especially because we know how much they committed to that movie. Just the hours of footage and all the stunts and things. So I got to see if it's switching gears here. The glass and furry Music festival took place over the weekend with paul McCartney delivering an iconic set, Take a look Yeah, 80 years young McCartney delivered a three hour performance taking on hits like Can't Buy Me love. I saw her standing there and band on the run. If the legendary Beatle wasn't enough, he was joined on stage by the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen and Food Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who was making his first public appearance since the death of his band's drummer Taylor Hawkins. The festival ended sunday with Kendrick Lamar headlining on the pyramid stage. The wrapper closed with a powerful message over the rollback of abortion rights here in the U. S repeating the phrase godspeed for women's rights, They judge you, they judge christ really powerful stuff And in addition to an incredible weekend of music. I mean I saw some of the footage on social media. I've never been able to attend but you could see the energy in that crowd. And also there was it was a huge moment for um those to speak up about the overturn of roe v wade. I saw viral footage from Olivia Rodrigo and lily allen with their performance specifically dedicated to the Supreme Court justices behind overturning roe v wade and also Megan the stallion making some really poignant messages known during the set that didn't even happen in the US. Yeah. I think that's what's so interesting right because this festival is over in the U. K. But this is obviously obviously a topic that the world is watching the world is watching this decision that we made. Going back to David Groll, paul, McCartney and Bruce Springsteen. That's an iconic picture and dare I say I wasn't there. But you kind of feel for those few moments with everything we're seeing in this country and around the world. A moment of unity. You can tell these are three iconic legends no matter what music you're into and for all three of them to come out. I think that's exactly what the world needed. Yeah definitely. I think music can be so healing especially in moments like this. So I'm looking forward to much more when it comes to music and performances this summer I think really I need to get to a concert. Yes, well let's keep on the subject of music because the B E. T awards celebrating black entertainers that took place in Los Angeles on sunday Megan thee stallion Kendrick Lamar were named best female and male hip hop artist. While Sean Diddy combs was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award mary J. Blige won the B E. T. Her award for Good Morning, gorgeous. Other winners include Jasmine Sullivan for best female R and B and pop artist Silk sonic for best group and Lotto as the best new artist. King Richard took home the best movie award beating out Candy man and space Jam. A new legacy Will smith was recognized for his role in the sports drama film. He did not attend those who were there, did not shy away from addressing the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse roe v wade host Harry Henson saying in her monologue, quote guns have more rights than a woman. It's a sad day in America. Meanwhile, Sullivan called on men to support women in fighting for their rights. I'm so glad they used this platform to talk about this. Also, let's talk about some performances Mariah Carey came out, I thought that was pretty iconic. Lizzo opened the show, Brandy showed up with Jack Harlow for his performance. A lot of, a lot of entertainment a lot of great music last night. Yeah. our producers filled me in on catching up. I didn't realize so I guess Jack Harlow got called out because he didn't realize that Brandy and Ray J were siblings, which I thought was hilarious. That was just a little bit of context to why they presented together. Also you mentioned will smith, he didn't actually make an appearance, He's been keeping a low profile since the Oscars, but someone who did show up was yeah, Kanye West presenting the award for Diddy who got a lifetime achievement award, Can we talk about his baby face? Yeah, can we talk about right now? Like completely covered. I mean I was happy to see him but we really didn't see him but hey look, he made an appearance and he said did he has influenced him in so many ways, so I'd like to see Kanye back, hopefully he's doing okay. And also a lifetime achievement award for Diddy, especially how much he's contributed not only to music, but really to culture as a whole. I think about everything he's done in the transition from musician to mogul. He was really designer, break the mold, designer, Yeah, all of those things iconic and I gotta mention it was interesting in his speech, trying to think of this in a positive way, He think his ex girlfriend of 10 years cassie and also his ex wife kim porter, which I think is also really important on this stage to show that he still has love for these people who are no longer romantically a part of his life. I think that's gross. That's very healthy. I think so too. I think that's very mature. Obviously these women played a huge role in his life and he's giving them some credit for that. We need to see this more for men and women. I love it. Go ahead. Did he? Absolutely. Ok. Switching gears here, inflation and supply chain issues. They're impacting every industry and now, including entertainment. Hollywood is figuring out how to build sets within budget and on time the industry is looking to cut production costs as inflation has hit everything from fuel to gaffer tape, brian cooper, a partner at Soundstage Company S two co telling the Hollywood reporter quote all across the board, we're facing increased costs where I could build a $3 million stage five years ago. That's $8 million now. One major studios, top production executive says if a scene calls for a bathroom, but nothing happens there, we won't have to bring it costs down. Now, several stage operators say the cost of raw materials including lumber and metal are at least 30% higher than at the beginning of 2022. With rising costs and stage space shortage. Studio conglomerates have allotted huge content budgets for programming this year. Disney plans to spend $33 billion bros discovery intends to spend 23. So this is really interesting because I've spoken about this, I think with you on this show before, in that as we hear the word recession and we have all of these concerns and fears from the general public. I often think back to the recession of 2000 and eight and I look at the movie theater industry and it was harkened as kind of recession proof because people need to escape um they want to get away from maybe the dread or whatever they're feeling in terms of anxiety from everyday life. So you think, oh yeah, movie theaters recession proof, but we know a lot of these different studios and especially streamers have pumped billions of dollars into production. So now it's almost like hitting the brakes on a lot of that production and realizing just how much goes into it when we come to supply chain issues thinking about coming out of this pandemic and also just inflation across the board. The cost of everything is clearly hitting everyone and now it's coming down to the entertainment industry. I wonder how this will play out when it comes to the quality of content or just how resourceful they're going to have to be um pointing to that quote that we had in this story when it comes to creating these sets and also the storylines around them, not to mention how many projects just a year or two ago were greenlit netflix for example, they were green lighting. Almost every project that came their way. You see all these streamers and these networks taking a step back being a little bit more selective about these projects and yeah, to your point, there is no sector that is safe from inflation. We talk about gas, energy, you know everything groceries, but now Hollywood kind of seeing you know, seeing the out of the fallout as well. I know and kind of crazy to think about it, especially as we were mentioning some of those supplies like gaffer's tape, literally everything across the board needed to do these jobs behind the scenes and in front of the camera.
