let's dive right into your top entertainment headlines were falling for you this hour and the box office is going bananas. That's because Minions Rise of Gru dominate the holiday box office for its opening weekend, the animated film managed to take home more than 100 and $25 million domestically. So that's a huge win for theaters. And the production studios alike boasting one of the top starts ever for an animated family film something the genre desperately needed after lukewarm opening from Disney's Lightyear. That brought in only $51 million in its opening weekend last month. So basically you have Sonic the hedgehog and grew with the Minions movie sort of the two sort of examples that family films are back now at theaters now. The kids are basically out for the summer out of school. They're getting the Covid vaccine because obviously that was a concern for families as well. So maybe it was light year just because the storyline wasn't as interesting given the fact that it didn't get very good reviews. As part of the reason why it didn't do as well. And then did you see this story that's like this trending thing now on Tiktok where kids are now like dressing up in suits and they're going to the theaters, you know, and they're being like crazy at the theater because of you know because it's basically they're dressing up this group but in the U. K. They're throwing these kids out of the theater. They're like telling them because they're being rowdy. But so anybody that's showing up in a suit to see Minions, they're like almost like throwing out now. By the way. I knew so many parents and kids. I went to see this movie over the weekend. I haven't seen hype like this in an animated film in quite some time and it really has a 70% on rotten tomatoes. But I don't think, I don't think the reviews matter here. It was a long holiday weekend. It was really smart for Universal to put it this weekend against nothing else. There was nothing else out this weekend. So that was really smart on universal's part And the kids of Hawkins have done it again. It's no surprise stranger things. Season four shattered viewing records. That's according to Nielsen numbers, viewers watched 7.2 billion minutes of viewing time in one week. That's the highest weekly total for any streaming title since Nielsen started tracking them. The record was set when part one of the latest season dropped during the last week of May. This is also the first time Any streaming show has passed a six billion minute mark in a week. Of course we all know how long these episodes are, which likely helped boost those numbers. The final two episodes of the season dropped on Friday and clock in about four hours in total. You remember friday around three a.m. Networks actually crashed So many people try to watch these things that there are two episodes basically the as long the length of an animal of a film. Yeah. Like, well not just a film, like Gone with the Wind we're talking about over here. Um So the Duffer Brothers have actually had to respond to the how long these final two episodes have been. And the Duffer brothers went on a podcast recently and said that except for maybe the series finale, maybe next year, none of the episodes in the final season coming up will be as long as these two episodes were right here. But it didn't seem to matter. I I mean, I get turned off when things are way too long. I've said this for the longest period of time with like batman and all these other movies that are three hours long. It didn't obviously deter anybody from still watching it. And it's still the most talked about show right now because of that. Yes. All right. Meanwhile, Adele's Vegas residency is still on the table that according to the british singer last weekend, Adele held her first live show in five years with two performances in Hyde Park. It was actually her interview with BBC Radio that has fans buzzing. That's because the singer said her planned and postponed Vegas residency is quote 100% happening. Adele went on to say quote, she was a shell of a person after canceling those shows, but stands by her decision. She told the BBC, quote, you can't buy me for nothing. I'm not going to do a show just because I have to or because people are going to be let down or because we're going to lose loads of money so far. No hint as to when the Vegas residency will be back. But there is some rumors and speculation about when potentially it could happen. The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting potentially they think Adele might announce either within this week or within the next couple weeks, but sometime this month, that likely that residency at caesars Palace would be october through december. So, a total of 24 shows in total, but it would be october to december of this year. And the reason why they're thinking that is because that is when the union workers at a lot of the colosseum would be available to finally be able to work to set up the stage for this performance. She says, look, the show wasn't good enough, it wasn't she wasn't ready to go live. And then she said, her son played a role in this as well. She says, her silence may have contributed to the backlash, but then she said, look, I'm not the kind of artist that post up on Tiktok offering daily updates. I'm not going to update you if I ain't got nothing to you, period exclamation points. And by the way, this this residency at Vegas is this it's being played at the coliseum the same place where Celine Dion played for so many, so many years. So you think october this according to the Las Vegas Review Journal, which again, I'm going to completely side with them on anything. They think october through december of this year. And if you can't believe it, tom Cruise, I can't believe this turned 60 60 years old this weekend. The actor's riding high after maverick success at the box office, passing the billion dollar mark over the weekend. It's the biggest hit of Cruz's career. But his past colleagues won't let him forget where he came from. Machine Impossible. Director Christopher McQuarrie shared a simple, shocking happy birthday message for Cruz on twitter Cruise of course is known for doing his own stunts including hanging from several planes. So happy birthday tom Here's hoping you have good health care insurance. You saw the movie this weekend. I finally saw it. I loved it. I thought it was amazing. The stunts are amazing and by the way, if you've seen some of the clips of this Mission Impossible thing. It's even more impressive than what he's done in Top Gun because he's 60 years old taking a motorcycle off of a cliff and and then landing on a parachute in like one of the clips which is also crazy. But on the topic of Top Gun, I mean that in itself should almost be a birthday present for him. Never has tom Cruise had a film grossed a billion dollars ever in his storied incredible career and this movie still was like third at the box office this weekend. It brought in like another $30 million at the box office over the weekend. So now it has 1.1 billion so far globally your paramount. You keep this film in theaters for as long as humanly possible and you wring out every last penny of this before you ever put this on paramount plus. I mean Matthew Belloni, you know who I'm obsessed with The puck News has said for the longest time, he thinks maybe this could get to a billion and a half potentially, which at this point you wouldn't be surprised because the numbers internationally are making so much money for them. And once again, he's proving he's very bankable.
