In Entertainment: Netflix Ads, 'Back to the Future' Musical & JT’s Awkward Dance

let's start with netflix Megan because this is making a lot of headlines today. It was only a matter of time, but ads are officially coming to netflix co. Ceo Ted Sarandos spoke at the Cannes Lions advertising Festival to explain why the streaming giant is going in that direction. Sarandos says, quote, we've left a big customer segment off the table. We're adding an ad tier. We're not adding ads to netflix as you know it today. We're adding an ad tier for folks who say, hey, I want a lower price and I'll watch ads. Netflix has been long opposed to advertising on its platform. However, disappointing figures last quarter that we talked about a lot on this show when the company lost 200,000 subscribers that changed its perspective. This is the first time the streamer has attended the global advertising festival assigned netflix wants to get better understanding of the ad industry and how it could be part of the future. I did not know netflix was not a part of the cans festival before this. That was surprising to me. I don't know why. Also, what I think is so interesting. Megan Netflix has publicly said for years they have no interest in offering an ad tier to its customers, but I guess if you lose 200,000 subscribers, this is one of those things. Also they said there was a memo from netflix employees that was leaked to the media that said the netflix actually compared their numbers to hulu and HBO max saying, listen, they can, these companies, these streamers are holding on to their subscribers because one of the reasons is they were always offering an ad tier for their consumers. So I think this is interesting considering for years they said there was no way they were going to do this well and they said that but like have you watched netflix? There's always product placement every everywhere, like strangers coke, how much coke do you want in this? And look we also, you know, I just feel like I'm always watching like a subtle add like like in a music video when the city card exactly, it's not so subtle at all, I would say. And what's funny about this in particular is that I think netflix is kind of gonna throw everything at the wall and see what sticks place right now because they can't be hemorrhaging users like this, right? Their cost of production is so incredibly high that even cutting their prices down a little bit and providing ads is going to be something they're going to have to figure out how to balance. Plus HBO is a great example of this, right? They also have premium content. They also have a lot of content, but I have the ad tier, I would have the ad tier because it's more expensive and it's like a bonus thing. People may start to think of netflix, that's a bonus thing and that means that they're gonna be willing to spend a little less. But yeah, okay, I'll sit through the 32nd ad every little bit like, okay, fine. I think that that could make a big difference. Plus it's not like product placement is going anywhere. It's clear they're a big fan of the product placement. By the way. You remember just a year ago, netflix was green lighting. Every project you can tell they're becoming a lot more selective and I'm sure this is playing a role in that as well. Well, yeah, and canceling so many things to Hannah. It's really, really interesting. Okay, I've got one that you're gonna love, Get ready, Synchronize your watches because Back to the Future is coming to broadway in 2023 marty McFly and Emmett Doc Brown, famously played by Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd became beloved characters back in the 80s thanks to the iconic trilogy and now they're coming to the great white way. A stage adaptation of Back to the Future is being made with the show. Expected to open on broadway sometime next year, the movie's official twitter account dropped a teaser trailer on twitter Wednesday, Very exciting. And other than a link that allows fans to try and get first access to tickets. Not many other details about the show are currently known. The show did make its world premiere in England in 2020 featuring stars Olly Dobson and Roger Bart Back to the Future was named best new musical at the 2022 olivier awards, Hannah, Yes, Hannah, are you going to go see it? I feel like you're gonna go see it, you know, I'm a broadway fan and I love this what I love about it even more. I have a 12 year old at home. I know you have young kids too. He's not interested in broadway but he's interested in Back to the Future and for years he loves these movies. They're so family friendly and child friendly. I remember seeing in the theater with my dad, I love everything about it. We don't know, we don't have any details except it's coming next year and I read a review from London that's saying it's based on just the first movie, which personally was my favorite anyway, out of the trilogy, so I can't wait. I'm so excited. I think that that is so important, right? Because the first, when you try to smash all the movies into a play, it's just not gonna work right. Exactly, I agree. It's totally too much future and then passed. It's just, let's not do that. But I think that focusing on one movie a time, it's great. I will say this, a musical adaptation of a movie can be a little hit or miss. So I've seen in the last few months, I've seen Catch Me if you can, which I do not believe needed to be a musical Girls. Did you not like it? I didn't dislike it. It just didn't need all the music. I think, I think that it was much more like madcap er when it was not musical, but I saw Mean Girls and I loved the music. I thought it added to the story. So there's definitely a balance that they're gonna have to strike. I can't wait. Maybe we see it together. Maybe we take our kids. Maybe, maybe there's a cheddar trip. That sounds fun. I love it. I'll come to new york for that. For sure. I would love that. Now, it felt like a while since we've seen Justin timberlake dominate the stage with his vocals and his impeccable dance moves usually. Well, he got back on the horse last weekend, but maybe he's just a bit out of his dancing tune. Timberlake gave us the ultimate dad vibe. So I had an initial reaction. Okay, it's not the old Justin timberlake. We know, I don't think it was that terrible. He's a better dancer than me. That's for sure. I also, I'm like watching like, what is everyone talking about? I feel like he was on on beats. I don't know. I don't look like this. This is apparent thing. Like you have kids and you lose all your rhythm. May be judgy. I think it was the khakis. Honestly, it's like, dude, you wore khakis to a concert of todd in D. C. Come on. Some skinny jeans would have been much more brand except now I've learned. I'm totally off because you were like the crop top and the baggy jeans. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm like totally lost here. Everyone's got to teach me all all our, our, our young guns at cheddar, they have to teach me what seriously follow all the stylish young employees and colleagues that I have a cheddar.
