In Entertainment: Oscars So Diverse, Netflix Goes to Eleven & 'Ghostbusters' Sequel

you know what you want. We're gonna give you those top entertainment headlines. We're following a big news for the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences getting a little bit bigger. That's because the academy has now invited 397 new members to join and that includes some big names. Anya Taylor, Joy, Billie, Eilish, Jamie Dornan and Oscar winners from this last year, Ariana DeBose and Troy Kat Sir. Now, if all this year's invitees accept their membership, it'll bring the total number of academy members to 10,665 with 9,665 eligible to vote for this next year's Oscars. The list of invitees includes actors, artists, casting directors, cinematographers and marketing executives. Now of the 2022 class, 44% are women and 37% are from underrepresented ethnic racial minority groups and 50% belong to 53 countries outside the US. Now, as a reminder, Oscars are awarded based on votes from members of the academy In the past, the ceremony has been called out for its lack of diversity across categories and that led to the movement Oscars so white. Now the 95th Oscar said to take place on March the 12th, 2023. Just remember two days ago you and I were just talking about the Golden globes and if they will ever come back the Golden globes because of what had happened in the fact that they had no people of color on there whatsoever. That was a situation that they haven't been able to get under control. The Oscars So white, there was so much concern that would the Oscars be able to recover because not only were they not nominating women for the director roles, you weren't seeing women of color, Men of color, people with disabilities, all of that getting nominations. Since that happened so much has changed as a result of all of that. You have Troy Koster just winning an Oscar. Just recently you're seeing more Women of Color is winning an Oscar as well. You're seeing more people getting these nominations and it's because you expand the voter rolls as a result of it. So change can happen. It takes process and it takes a while. But the Oscars have shown if any of these organizations need help that it can be done. Yeah, a long way to go. But I love this, I really do. Also. The Russo Brothers and Millie bobby Brown are keeping their talents within netflix. The Stranger Things actor will star in the streamers. You film the Electric state joe and Anthony Russo who directed both Avengers and Game and Avengers Infinity War are set to direct a futuristic sci fi movie. Now the Electric State is based on an illustrated book by Simon Stalin Hog Brown will pay an orphaned teen who's in search of her younger brother as she travels through the american west chris pratt is in talks to join Brown as one of the stars of the cast for the Hollywood reporter. This is just one of many projects the russo Brothers are involved with in with netflix production of the electric state is expected to begin this fall in Atlanta. I'm in like whatever, this is essentially almost like Stranger Things two point because you have, you have the Russo Brothers, you've got, you've got her essentially all tied to all of this. So it's almost like essentially like another version of what she's doing and you talk about this all the time. Netflix lately hasn't been green lighting a lot of projects, but the Russo Brothers, I feel like anything with sean derives. I think they just exactly netflix has now gotten to a phase now where they are going to only green light things they know are going to be a hit for the longest period of time. Netflix because they were spending $17 billion a year on content was like green light everything and that's as a result so many people, like most of the stuff on there is junk what most of the stuff you're watching is not very good. So now they're being much more strategic about what sort of things that they're green lighting and clearly they know russo brothers, Millie bobby Brown all guaranteed to be hits here. Now. Speaking of chris pratt, the guardians of the Galaxy star now confronting outrage over his religious beliefs. Pratt connects the hatred that he gets on social media to a public misconception about his religious beliefs, which he thinks stems from his acceptance speech at the 2018 MTV movie and Tv awards. That's when he said, quote, God is real and God loves you, God wants the best for you. The actor telling men's health, quote, I didn't know that, it would be kind, I would kind of become the face of religion when really I'm not a religious person. However, it's not just his MTV speech that made people made a connection about all of this. Pratt recently received backlash because of his alleged involvement with the Hillsong Church that have been long condemned for being anti L G B T Q. Elliot page even slammed Pratt on social media for belonging to an organization that hates a certain group of people that Pratt clarified to men's health saying, quote, I never went to Hillsong, I've never actually been to Hillsong, I don't know anyone from that church. He said in the men's health interview that he actually goes to a church called Zoe Church, he and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, but when you look at the church, the leader of that church is from Hillsong, so it's Hillsong adjacent. So yes, semantics, he's probably correct in this, but when you look at this church in particular, this pastor that runs this church doesn't talk about lifestyle issues apparently in the past, he has been an executive producer for an anti LGBT movie at one point in the past as well. So, again they're all nuances here. The problem, I think a lot of people are having is why did chris pratt feel like he had to actually come out and say this? Because now all of a sudden you're having christians coming out saying, well now you saying your not religious, we felt the connection to you. So why are you actually coming out here saying this now? What sort of the problem? What are you, what sort of the problem with what you're doing here? I'm gonna go on a limb here. And I think it's a lot there are many other reasons why people don't like chris pratt and I don't think it's just his religious beliefs or lack thereof personally. I mean who knows at this particular point, but there must have been some reason as to why he had basically gone on sort of this tangent for a long time. And by the way, you can look on his instagram and he has photos of him on his instagram wearing a cross. So there's nothing wrong with saying that, your religion, but the fact that now he's coming out saying that he's not what was sort of the motive behind that. I think that is leading a lot of people to sort of question why? Because I think at the end of the day, people like authenticity and this just doesn't feel real at this point And who you gonna call again, that's right. The Ghostbusters are back, did I deliver that? Okay I tried the next flick in the franchise will hit theaters on December 20, 2023. The sequel by the way is a follow up to Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters Afterlife which stars, we love him here at Cheddar Paul. The film was a critical and commercial success for Sony. It earned more than $200 million dollars at the global box office despite the pandemic Afterlife also reunited the O. G. Stars. We're talking Bill Murray, dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson all making appearances. It's currently unknown if those actors will return. I hope so. I would love to see Bill Murray and dan Ackroyd. Absolutely. So are we already assuming that there's no kids in this one now as a result of this wasn't their kids in the last Ghost Ghostbusters Afterlife. This was all centered around kids in this last one was it? I think it was with paul Rudd's character as well. So this is why I don't look the kids look Ghostbusters basically has basically they know the I. P. And this is going to work and why not continue the success of this and now you've essentially got paul sort of the face on this program and they're also going to different demographics. We grew up on Ghostbusters but now it's being introduced to a whole new generation which I love
