Weekend Box Office

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was the winner at the weekend box office with $20 million dollars in its debut. The anime film showed in 3,130 theaters and marked Toei Animation's biggest opening weekend ever. Idris Elba's Beast took second place with $11.5 million, and coming in at number three was Bullet Train with $8 million in its third week. Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick continued to rake it in after passing the $1.4 billion mark this weekend becoming the sixth-highest grossing film in history.

'Knives Out' Sequel

Good news for the fans of the hit 2019 film Knives Out. A sequel project is on the way! Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is expected to hit Netflix on December 23 after its theatrical release — which has not yet been announced. The streaming giant released some first-look photos, and the cast packs some serious star power. Some of the people pictured include returning star Daniel Craig, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Junior, and Kate Hudson. 

'Lord of the Rings' in Theaters

Ahead of the streaming release on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere its first two episodes in the cinema. For one night only, on August 31, fans will be able to watch the start of the prequel series at select Cinemark theaters. The remaining 18 episodes will stream on the Amazon platform with the final episode expected to drop on October 14. 

'House of the Dragon' Premiere

Speaking of big-budget fantasy adaptations, the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon finally kicked off on HBO Max this weekend but not without a few technical glitches. The highly-anticipated series crashed the streaming platform after going live on Sunday night. According to the tracking website Downdector, more than 3,300 outages of the service were reported around the premiere at about 9:00 p.m. ET.
