In Entertainment: Sundance Back to In-Person, MCU's Wonder Man & Tom Hanks App

While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to repair its image and try to save the Golden Globes, another entertainment organization is dealing with their own issues. 10 members of the Hollywood Critics Association have renounced their membership including their president. Nine people resigned. One expelled that amid questions about the film critics organizations, finances and voting processes. H. C. A. Ceremonies are not televised. Although the event does draw some pretty big names. Rami Malek mandy moore Sydney Sweeney all attending this year just to name a few. And as the rest of the world wonders if the award shows are even still relevant or even necessary. These Hollywood groups can't seem to get out of their own way. The Golden Globes didn't air this year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lost members for cutting eight categories from the live Oscars telecast. And the Grammys have faced years of accusations of bias against women and black artists. This one obviously a little bit different because it doesn't have any sort racial allegations attached to it. This one has to do with voting processes. Apparently there's been some transparency issues where some voting members have asked how things are tabulated and basically you know shunned because of that. There's also some questions about where money is going to particularly the Hollywood reporter reporting that only one or two people oversee the bank account for the entire organization. Which is also really sort of crazy here. So really sort of interesting if you have the chance to go to Hollywood reporter. It's a very very long story. Very good inside story of what's happening there. You mentioned something really interesting though, are these awards shows even relevant. The MTV music awards we talked about that. Is that like one of the more popular shows now? I don't know, we don't really miss the golden globes this year. We didn't and then there's reports potentially NBC might be bringing it back because look, the publicist basically have all the pool when it comes to the golden globes. Because if there's, if their clients, they're the celebrities that we actually care about walking the red carpet aren't showing up to these events because there's racial allegations attached to it. There's no gold. And it's interesting because now we're sort of in this weird way because like V. M A. S, we were talking about the VMS, but not really so much about the winners. It was like, it was all about sort of the weird stuff that happens. But with the, with the Oscars, we always want to talk about who won the awards. Is there some sort of hybrid middle ground that these award shows can basically have to stay relevant? I'm intrigued to see if that's the case here. Speaking of hybrid middle ground, after two years of exclusively virtual screenings, the Sundance Film Festival is returning to an in person event next year. The celebration, the best of indie filmmaking will take place from january 19th to the 29th of 2023. If you can't make it to the mountains of Park city Utah, you'll still be able to access to the newest art house films, but not until later in the festival on january 24th. The festival's digital element will offer curated selection of feature films, including all competition titles. There will also be a lineup of multimedia works and keynote discussions on Sundance's digital platform. So this will be a bit hybrid. What's interesting is this is in january, they've already told the employees and a lot of the people that'll be working there. They need to be masked up. They still need to be tested weekly. And if we go guest voluntarily have to put could put on a mask and fingers crossed that we do get to go, look, Sundance maybe next to can, maybe next to venice Telluride. Those are some of the big, most important movie festivals out there and you Absolutely, especially when you have all these streamers like apple and netflix and everybody else snatching up all of these films more so than a lot of these distribution companies in these big production houses, it puts more of a significance on these film studios, especially to be in person to get there. But maybe if there's a silver lining to all of this, maybe the pandemic needed to happen for them to realize maybe you can have a hybrid sort of system across the board where some of the big, the big films that you think are gonna fetch tons of money you have in person screenings for. But then you're able to sort of expand the sort of reach by still having part of it online so people that can't make it can still basically part take in the festival without actually physically having to be there. I mean how many blockbusters are award winning movies have tons, tons. I mean just the most recent one that won the Oscar. Just one was at Sundance just recently, I can't remember. Thank you. Yeah and Apple paid the most amount of money ever for a film at Sundance at that. So yeah these things but these things are incredibly significant here. Meanwhile Ben Kingsley headed back to the M. C. U. The Oscar winner is set to reprise his role of Trevor Slow Battery in the upcoming Disney plus series. Wonder Man for those who don't know Slattery is a bumbling actor hired to portray the menacing villain, the mandarin before his true identity is finally discovered. This is gonna Mark Kingsley's fourth appearance in the M. C. You. That following his 2013 appearance in Iron Man three, a follow up to the short film and last year's Sean Key in the Legend of the 10 Rings The Wonder Man series was first announced back in june. The series will focus on the marvel character Simon Williams. A k a wonder man who is the son of a wealthy industrialist. Wonder man's company falls on some pretty hard times due to some competition from Tony Stark Stark industries. So he eventually accepts an offer from a villain that gives him superpowers as now. It's unclear how Kingsley would factor into the show's plot. But sources say he'll play a very major role here and you can't get a bigger name really in Hollywood when it comes to universal acclaim. Oscar nominations all of that stuff than Ben Kingsley. Sir Ben Kingsley to be exact. Um So this is amazing and the fact that he's already sort of dabbled in the marvel cinematic universe already you would have to think this is incredible news for marvel fans and I think some people forget he played Gandhi he dominated several times for Oscars. Like he is an incredible actor. Some people just know him from the M. C. U. Universe which he did great but his body of work. This is an incredible actor. I'm so excited and this just goes to show that marvel. There's always been sort of this argument that like this is it's good if it isn't good for your career sort of go into these marvel movies because it's like yeah do you get typecast in a way because then all of a sudden you're always sort of looked at as like the superman or the marvel characters or all this other stuff. You can still basically be one of the top actors on the face of the planet and still be able to do some of these marvel movies at the same time, I think this is great. Absolutely! Who is tom Hanks question? Yeah. In this case the answer is the latest celebrity to launch his own app. Who wrote that? That's very good writing the new platform called Hank's 101 trivia will consist of nearly 60,000 trivia questions, hitting on everything from history, art, science and food. Apple is creating and developing the app in partnership with the Star Hanks will narrate the game and you can play on your own or against others to see who the ultimate trivia master is. Hank's one oh one trivia will launch september 2nd, that's this week on Apple arcade which offers more than 200 titles, but this will be the first trivia game on the platform. Okay, I'll say this not to be a groupie here, but I will pretty much subscribe to anything. Tom Hanks has his name on it. Oh my God, I almost want us to just cancel this weekend trivia this week hosted by Connor White, our executive producer and just have us playing the Tom Hanks game on. I think this is so amazing. And this is basically Apple's first trivia game on the Apple arcade and apparently I had to look this up. He has done another app before with Apple, he made a typewriter app for the ipad at one particular place and when everybody found out that it was done by Tom Hanks and his production comes, it was the number one app for your ipad. It basically translated things in a typewriter. I just think this is so cool and if anything, I just wish this was also a television show because I think tom Hanks would make such a good trivia game. He will and maybe try to get him on. I agree. Alright, so with tom Hanks new trivia app launching this week. Well it's only fitting. We do a trivia question about the film, actor and filmmaker, so had a what was, but this is a tough one. Tom Hanks feature film debut, was it Bachelor Party? He knows you're alone. That sounds like a horror film splash. Oh my God, I love splash or the man with one red shoe. Now I have to admit I did see Bachelor Party, my first film, I think I ever remember seeing of tom Hanks when I was a young kid in the eighties probably was splash and I still love splash but I don't know if it was his first either because I think splash. What had Daryl Hannah. Yeah, I think it's between B and D. But I don't know what, so he knows you're alone. You're so funny because he knows you're alone. Like every Hollywood actor always starts in like a horror film like that, that's always like they're getting George George Clooney's first role was a horror film, I think jennifer Aniston's first role was a horror film. Do you want? I mean I don't, by the way, I don't even know if this is a horror film, I'm just taking a shot in the dark. It is. Oh yes it produces hurry up. Yes, exactly. Alright. Hanks made his film debut with a minor role in the 1980 horror film. He knows you're alone the following year, the actor landed his first big break starring in the sitcom bosom buddies on abc which led to guest appearances on several shows. His breakthrough role was in the comedy, iconic movie. Big. I love that. I love that movie that was back in 1988 in which he got his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor for more fun trivia questions. He's only been nominated for best actor six times. He's only won it twice. Meryl Streep philadelphia. I think philadelphia he won and I think there was another film, he won but like yeah but like you think, I think it was Forrest gump but like he has been so many iconic roles over the course of his career. You think he'd be nominated? Like Meryl Streep, which is like nine ba jillion times, but it's only been six, Which is crazy. I don't think he's been nominated for the last like 10 years or so beloved. Who cares about the, who cares? All right.
