caught up on some of the top entertainment headlines we're following for you this hour in the God of Thunder Asia is about to take over the box office. We're talking about thor Love and Thunder. The fourth stand alone marvel film starring chris Hemsworth order doing major damage overseas. It racked up $15.7 million in its opening day. The thor sequel had its biggest start in Korea with $3.1 million that followed down under in Australia with another three million. The new marvel film doesn't look like it's slowing down either. Overall ticket sales are pacing 39% ahead of 2017, thor Ragnarok that brought in 100 and $22 million in its opening weekend. Now thor Love and Thunder is expected to bring in at least 100 and 45 to $155 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Some estimates even have a lot more faith than the God of Thunder. They have it reaching as high as $170 million. The film, however, currently only has a 69% on rotten tomatoes. So clearly Asia, nobody is being swayed by the, by the reviews. It's funny variety, had one of the more pleasing reviews of these varieties, Owen Gillibrand basically said it's pleasing. Um this movie and it says a let's try it on and shoot the works Effervescence that it gets from it. I don't really know what that means. Um but clearly everybody is loving going to the theaters right now. And clearly God of Thunder is just gonna crush it this weekend. Yeah let's try it on and shoot the works Effervescence. I feel like that could be used to describe between dolls. Have to look into a little bit more but pacing 39% greater than the last thor installment. I think it's just the fact that everyone wants to get back out into the world. Go see movies. Also audiences haven't really seen thor since the last Avengers finale movies and um anticipated like Spider man. No way home. This is a stacked cast. We have Chris Hemsworth Natalie Portman Taika Waititi also in a directing and starring role and not to mention christian bale. And it's also got that eighties appeal that we're seeing with things like Stranger Things. So of course it's gonna do well are you gonna go see it? I know you're not the biggest on the M. C. U. But I kind of want to rewatch the movies and go see it. Look if if there was ever going to be a marvel film that I was ever going to get into. It was always going to be the thor movies. Just because I have this thing for chris Hemsworth. So yes maybe potentially I'll maybe get back to you on that one. And he's got some racy scenes in this one baker but let's stick with thor Taika Waititi returned to direct the sequel as we mentioned and during an interview promoting the film he recalled an awkward conversation with Star Natalie Portman, listen to this ytd who will helm the next Star Wars film. Try to get a jump on casting, asking Portman if she wanted to be in the movie. The problem is she's already been in not one, not two, but three Star Wars films. While a lot of people might want to forget the prequel trilogy, it still counts guys. Why TD explain the interaction by saying quote Natalie said to me, what do you do next? And I said I'm trying to work on a Star Wars thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie? She said I've been in Star Wars movies while details are still scarce on whitey t. Star Wars film and what it will look like. We now know one thing Natalie Portman, she probably will not be in this one. Um I am obsessed with this story for so many reasons. I think it's hilarious. Especially because I I don't want to make it completely about you and I but we do research for stories that we're supposed to talk about and it's kind of similar to the research that has been doing, he directed an episode of the Mandalorian, I think season one, he also has the Star Wars movie coming up and it just goes to show like you can never be too knowledgeable when it comes to Star Wars because it's such a broad ranging galaxy. So on one hand, I feel like this is a little unforgivable because I mean sad mate, she's Queen amidala. Like how do you forget that at the same time Natalie Portman also has a very wide ranging career. She's done a million things so I kind of do forgive him. It's unforgivable but I forgive him because it's no no no no it's it's unforgivable. There's no forgiving in this situation whatsoever, especially given the fact that she's in this movie with him. And then he brought it up in a conversation to her. I mean I know nothing about Star Wars movies besides maybe Baby Yoda but even I know that she isn't, she had like the red dots on her face and everything. I remember everything about it. It's funny because the Rolling Stone interviewer didn't think Tyco Ouachita was actually being serious so they pressed him on this and they said are you sure that that conversation really happened and take a walk. Et apparently said well I forgot about those ones apparently is what he said but apparently Natalie Portman I guess took it all in stride. She said I've been in a Star Wars movie and I went should we do another take um So I mean I guess she's just like laughing it off all the way to the bank I guess I think if there's anyone that's gonna shade you and it's taika I'd be okay with it because it seems very innocent and also a lot of fans are now calling for her to be in this upcoming movie and have like a gentle nod. Maybe a completely different character. Obviously we can't revisit pad for the spoiler alert for anyone who has not watched Star Wars. Uh she cannot return but for her to return in another character and do a subtle nod like you look familiar which I think would also be really funny. They've done weirder things and by the way I think you're right Take away Katie. I think out of any other director probably gets a pass because he's funny. He's jokey. And if this was steven, Spielberg would be like what is wrong with you? But yes you're absolutely right. Meanwhile let's talk Apple Tv plus. They dominated the nominations for the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association Tv awards in a way no other streaming platform has ever with a stunning and record setting 53 nominations, Apple's new streaming service continues to have a very good year. Severance. Your favorite show Asia and Ted Lasso led the way, both scoring 12 nods while another Apple series. The after party also received several nominations. Apple T. V. Plus is domination in the streaming sector comes as coda which the company acquired at the Sundance Film Festival for a record price won the Oscar for Best Picture. The Hollywood Critics Association will have a two night celebration. The podcast network and cable Tv awards ceremony will take place on august the 13th, that is the streaming awards ceremony will be held on august the 14th. So this is sort of interesting because netflix we kind of think of spending you know almost $20 billion on content should be the company that we should be talking about on stuff like this, but they're not because if you watch netflix you're like this is a hit, this is a Miss Apple has really sort of dived into, we're going to spend on quality, not quantity, netflix is the opposite, but then at the same time, you know, Apple Tv plus has a myriad of different great content on the platform and they still are spending like crazy on quality shows. So this goes to show and this is by the way what HBO max is trying to do right now as well spending on the quality people will watch the quality if it's there. I mean this is incredible. 53 nominations for Apple Tv plus, I kind of want to bring in a food metaphor though for you baker. Like if you had a fridge full of you know, the very nicest, maybe Aragon items, super healthy, super expensive. But there weren't that many items in the fridge but they were all great for you, would you choose that or a fridge where you never know what's gonna be in there. Sometimes there's junk food, sometimes there's like you know, filet mignon that you can heat up but like I really don't know which way I go because I do appreciate netflix and that sometimes there are surprises you get into a series even though it's you know, maybe not Academy Award nominated or ready for an award show like this uh for the circuit, it's still entertaining and there's like a variety to that approach for netflix and we also know their first mover. So they have the advantage, still have 220 million subscribers completely dwarfing apples 1.57 million increase, even though they've seen an increase over the course of this year, Like, which do you choose? I love that you invoke their want for our viewers who don't know everyone is like the most boogie like nice grocery store on the planet in Los Angeles. So if you're there, obviously you love Erawan, I actually almost view this almost as a metaphor of like HomeGoods, it's like a search like someday I'm gonna get something really nice and then the rest of this stuff is just complete junk that I'm not paying $5 for. Um but either way, I think this is sort of the crux right now that we're in with streaming, we have now reached peak television where there's just so much content to watch, it's impossible to sort of stay up on top of everything, but somehow I may be in the same boat with me. I do know what's always on Apple tv plus because there's always quality shows on there? But I could never tell you what is streaming on netflix every weekend. Yeah I I will say you know I'm an Apple TV plus fan, I think a lot of this also has to do with the price hikes from Netflix and $5 looking like a bargain for Apple TV plus to your point. Um but let's talk about this one Bob. Dylan recently rerecorded blown in the wind for the first time in 60 years and one lucky person is the new owner of it. But it came for a hefty price tag. Get this nearly point $8.1.8 million. There we go. One of a kind record selling at an auction at Christie's in London on Thursday. It went way over its estimated value which was ranged between $716,000 and about $1.2 million. The single copy of the 1962 hit made with his longtime collaborator T Bone Burnett and was featured as part of Christie's exceptional sale during its classic week, 2022 Marks Dylan's 60th anniversary as a recording artist and have blown in the wind which was written for his second album. So I'm not like the most up on my bob Dylan musicology and history. But I will say I think this is really interesting, especially in the environment that you and I are covering N. F. T. S. And what does it mean to own blowing in the wind in the rerecording? Does that mean you have rights to sell this to labels or does this mean you have the rights if you auction this off to a movie or a tv series. Were recently talking about Stranger Things and Kate Bush and how she's now making $1 million running up that hill which is absolutely smashing it with like a whole new audience and I hear it now on the radio all the time. Um so I think $1.8 million dollars you know if I had that laying around, I don't know if I'd be spending that on a rerecording but at the same time it's pretty attractive when you think about what it could mean lucratively as a business, especially when it comes to music these days. Look Kate Bush played the long game. She just had to wait 37 years for that thing to become a hit. So good for her $1.8 million. Is there a song out there that you would pay that money for? I mean I was thinking maybe Sisqo thong song maybe Beyonce. Yes one of these other songs. But it's interesting because all of these artists are selling so much of their catalogs right now because now is the time for them to really sort of cashing in their songs? Is it because there's potential down the road in terms of tax loopholes that it's cheaper now to sell this now. Are they not gonna make this back in streaming rights? Because we know artists basically make pennies now, is it? You know, just to sell all this stuff just to cash out now. This is all the good questions. But literally if you're selling $1.8 million thinking what Taylor Swift's gonna be doing 10 years from now when she's selling a lot of this stuff. I was gonna say that was such a good question to think about what song you'd be willing to purchase. I guess millennials from now on, we can't afford houses but maybe we can buy the rights to a major song. No, no if anything now forget Bitcoin and N. F. T.
