Biggie Smalls in the Metaverse
As an Oculus fan, I'd say if there's one thing Meta's metaverse has been good at so far, it's entertainment. From being able to attend live NBA games to concerts, the allure factor has been great and now they're expanding that. The company recently announced that late The Notorious B.I.G. is set to perform — sort of. Twenty-five years after his passing, Meta is giving fans of the Brooklyn native a chance to see him in virtual reality. It's a celebration of what would have been the rapper's 50th birthday on May 21. Those who don't own a Meta Quest headset can watch the 2D version on Biggie's official Facebook page. The concert is set for December 16.
Who Is 'Queen of Christmas?'
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office told Mariah Carey to slow her Christmas sleigh down and reverse away from the "Queen of Christmas" title. Earlier this year the singer filed to trademark it, along with phrases like "QOC" and "Princess of Christmas." An appeals board announced this week that she was denied after another singer, Elizabeth Chan, contested the move. She claimed she is also known as the Queen of Christmas and has 12 Christmas albums to back it up. Lawyers for Carey did have a chance to respond to Chan's contest before a final decision was made but, for whatever reason, did not.
No Booze on CNN
If you're used to ringing in the new year with the cable news network CNN, then you should be prepared for the 2023 broadcast to look a little different and probably a lot less — drunk. The network announced that it would be cutting back on the on-air drinking, which has gotten out of hand at times. The move comes as new CEO and chairman Chris Licht oversees his first NYE production at the network. He took over for former company president Jeff Zucker who resigned abruptly in February over a secret workplace relationship.
