Instacart is teaming up with Albertsons to offer same-day grocery delivery. With this deal, Instacart is expanding its service to more than 1,800 Albertsons stores nationwide. Instacart CEO Apoorva Mehta explains how the start-up was able to ramp up its operation for this partnership. While a challenge logistically, Mehta says Instacart has done this before through partnerships with other grocers such as Kroger and Costco. Albertsons serves 34 million customers each week. In August, Amazon acquired Whole Foods for $13.7 Billion. Mehta says this was a "massive turning point" for Instacart, who has a partnership with Whole Foods running until 2021. Whether or not grocers had e-commerce before Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods, its clear they now need it, says Mehta. Instacart started 2017 in 30 markets, and now the company is in 163 markets. "We have over doubled our overall sales as a company, compared to last year," said Mehta. "We plan to more than double our engineering and product team next year."
