Canada will legalize marijuana soon, and its government put out a call for suggestions on how to regulate the industry. And surprisingly...IBM sent in a proposal to use blockchain. Jodie Emery, Editor-In-Chief at Cannabis Culture, joins Cheddar to discuss the suggestion. IBM says a blockchain could help the government ensure that cannabis crops are legally grown, appropriate taxes are collected, and black market sales are blocked. Emery isn't so convinced. She says the Canadian marijuana industry is worth billions of dollars and for a company like IBM to try to gather all the data of every seed planted seems impossible. She believes going to blockchain may be a good idea for the business side of IBM, but not so practical in execution. She notes that the cannabis plant is being treated very differently from any other plant. She suggests the government allows the cannabis industry to come forward and shed light on how it believes the industry would be regulated.
