Welcome back everyone to between bells and baker machado in new york. The legendary and honorable Judge Greg Mathis and his family ready to share their unfiltered lives with the rest of the world. Matthew's Family matters follows Judge Mathis and his wife linda that along with their four grown Children all as they navigate life relationships and so much more take a look my family, what can I say? Who are you texting? Texting like the electric chair, shoot the grit shot up my ice cream man. Okay, come on man. And joining us now is Judge Greg Mathis Judge Great to have you here on cheddar news. Thanks glad to be here. Please forgive. The background is blank because they have me locked in the room saying I'm on time out my family, I've been walking around with this hat that says love thinking that they changed their mind. I'm in time out as you'll see on our show matters Family matters, we will judge any kind of way. I love this Judge, We will take you with any background possible. Fans clearly love this show. Why do you think it resonates so well with viewers, even when you're not in front of the cameras, you're just hanging out in a room by yourself? Yeah, that's right. I think it's fun um, and fun loving. I think what we're talking about now. I think we're discussing it in a fun way that's entertaining to your viewers uh, and that's what matters Family matters is uh we uh first and for almost have the natural authentic fund and closeness that we experience and have experienced uh throughout our family life. And so they're just seeing on television that love that fun. And also they're seeing us uh fight and move past our personal obstacles. Each of us have a personal obstacle and we want the viewers to know that money prestige television personalities whatever your status in life, every family has an obstacle and we show how we come together and try and work those obstacles out as a family with good advice, they call mine uninvited advice, unsolicited advice. But I'm giving it anyway. Okay that actually right in my next question because we know you judge as the courtroom judge, we've seen you do that for so long. So what can viewers sort of expect from this? Judge Mathis, the husband, the father as opposed to the judge in the courtroom and this is so humiliating for you to even remind the viewers. Yes I am the authority in my court. Things go my way I call the shots. Unfortunately when I get home it's the direct opposite. I am pretty much a sucker for the family. They do me any kind of way my grand. So that chokes me at will pinches me at Will and I just have to take it so they'll see the opposite I love but I love that it sort of shows shows the balance of who you are as a person which is so amazing. And also what I feel like fans really like about this at least I'm one of them is the topics that your family goes through L. G. B. T. Q. Rights, finding love. Was it sort of hard being vulnerable and sharing that with the public? Cause we see you again in a completely different light during the daytime. Certainly it was very emotional when my son told me, you know, we've known he's been gay since 18 uh when he told me that everyone doesn't know in his world that he's gay and I asked why and he told me because he was worried about how it would affect my viewers because many are homophobic. Uh And as such he was trying to protect me. And I was very emotional because it was tantamount to your son, putting me ahead of himself being himself, He wasn't living his life because he wanted to preserve the reputation. He thought of his father. And of course I explained to him that he has a responsibility as I have always taken against folks who are discriminated against or for folks who are discriminated against. He has an obligation now to get on that front line and fight back against the discriminate against L. B. G. T. Q. Community discrimination as I have for race for poverty, for Latinos, for women. And now I'm on the front line. L. B. G. T. Q. With my son, there's no better fight bless you sir. And I know as somebody who's in that community means the world when you have your family behind you during that entire process. I mean your show has been on for so long, 23 seasons, you received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which by the way, we see this in the show. Judge, What did it mean to you to receive that recognition? Especially at this point in your career to now have a star? Certainly it was the culmination of awards if you will. Um the Star on the Walk of Fame, I received many as people know, I received the Emmy and many others, but this was most special because it's gonna be something that my family, my Children, my grandchildren, great grand Children can take their friends down uh to Hollywood boulevard and say that's my granddad and he did this and he did that. That's the specialness about it. I asked the member of the chamber of Congress who organized at the Hollywood Chamber of Congress, I said so what if they have an earthquake? He say we'll rebuild it. I said, does that mean I'm the immortal? Yes, that's the that's the visual that we're looking for. Is that earthquake judge in honor of the new show? And of course you and your wife being the judges at home, we want to play a little quick game with you. It's called, who's the judge of that Judge. I'm gonna tell you some scenarios all you have to do, tell me who is the judge of that situation at home between you and your wife linda wanna play. Alright first up the extended family is coming to town. Judge it's time to throw down in the kitchen. Who's handling the cooking in this you or linda. Well I have to admit my wife is an excellent cook. She's chef level cook so I don't even come into that Linda's the judge of that one. Okay next one you and Linda have 30 seconds to make the family laugh. Who's getting those laughs? Well I'm gonna make the last of course of course. Next one. Judge the family movie night who's picking the film? Is that you're linda? I'm not gonna come across the selfish but we'll have to compromise. Okay. Alright okay. Alright. Alright. Alright. Alright. A mistrial. Alright. Finally you and linda get a call from the principal's office about one of your kids who's handling that. Who's the judge of that? Well these days it wouldn't be me in the past, it was me going up to that school with a belt. Unfortunately we be bald and we know that that was wrong so it won't be me anymore.
