Kim Kardashian West’s partnership with Lyft to provide 5,000 incarcerated individuals with free rides to job interviews upon their release could begin as early as next month.

A large group of inmates that will utilize the program is set to be released on July 19, TMZ reported citing sources close to Kardashian. The initiative is being spearheaded by #cut50, a nationwide advocacy campaign to lower the country's prison population and reverse recidivism.

“This is a big issue politically, it's a big issue culturally, and I think that in the eyes of Lyft it is just kind of a win to say that you are being supportive of these initiatives,” Natasha Alford, deputy editor at TheGrio, told Cheddar.

At the White House last week, Kardashian, #cut50 organizers, and business leaders announced the initiative, which included the Lyft ($LYFT) partnership as well as pathways to government jobs, access to affordable housing, and increased funding for higher education.

The campaign aims to help individuals released from prison as part of the First Step Act, which was lobbied for by Kardashian and reformed federal prison sentencing laws. Trump signed the legislation into law in December 2018.

“I’m at the place in my life were I wanted to make a difference and just wanted to do the right thing,” Kardashian said alongside President Trump last Thursday. She added that her “heart just completely opened up” during her meetings with inmates over the last several months.

“People who have been in the criminal justice reform space want tangible results,” Alford said. “For people who are ready to come home, people who have been out of prison and are looking to start their life over, I don’t think they necessarily care whether a celebrity is involved. They want to see change in their life.”
